Modular Shoulder Prostheses

Modular Shoulder Prostheses

US Patent:
6589282, Jul 8, 2003
Filed:
Dec 29, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/752701
Inventors:
Michael L. Pearl - Los Angeles CA
Assignee:
Implex Corporation - Allendale NJ
International Classification:
A61F 240
US Classification:
623 1914, 623 1911, 623 2311
Abstract:
A humeral prosthetic device having a body, a stem for anchoring the device in a humeral canal of a humerus, and a head for replacing a natural humeral head of the humerus. The head is disposed at a selected angle relative to the stem and at least one of the body and stem may control the selected angle of the head relative to the stem. Further, the stem may include an extension for coupling the stem to the body. The extension may be disposed on an axis parallel to and offset from a center line of the stem for providing a lateral offset of the body relative to the stem upon reversal of the stem in the humeral canal. The humeral prosthetic device may further include an insert which coacts with the body and the head of the device to provide superior, inferior, anterior, and posterior positioning of the head relative to the body.

Method And Apparatus For Preparing A Glenoid Surface

Method And Apparatus For Preparing A Glenoid Surface

US Patent:
7294133, Nov 13, 2007
Filed:
Jun 2, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/143529
Inventors:
Robert W. Zink - Warsaw IN, US
Roy C. Wiley - Warsaw IN, US
Gregory P. Nicholson - Western Springs IL, US
Michael Pearl - Los Angeles CA, US
Assignee:
Zimmer Technology, Inc. - Chicago IL
International Classification:
A61B 17/58
US Classification:
606 96
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for facilitating shoulder arthroplasty by providing a reference to establish version of the glenoid. In one form of the invention, a guide for positioning a guide pin to facilitate implantation of a glenoid prosthesis is provided. To properly position the guide pin, the guide is first oriented with respect to the scapula. A portion of the guide is positioned over the approximate center of the glenoid surface and another portion of the guide is positioned against the anterior surface of the scapula. After the guide is properly positioned, the guide pin is inserted through an aperture in the guide and anchored in the glenoid. Thereafter, the guide pin can serve as an alignment guide for other devices used to modify the glenoid surface. For example, a reamer having a cannulated central shaft can be placed over the guide pin and utilized to resurface the glenoid.

Abstract:
A method, apparatus, system, and article of manufacture provide the ability to utilize fingertip tracking technology during the course of a medical examination. A sensor is mounted on a fingertip of a finger of a first person. Such a sensor is communicatively coupled to a computer to record measurements. The sensor is calibrated using a known target. The finger having the sensor is then engaged to perform a medical examination directly on a second person. Measurements are obtained from the sensor on the fingertip during the medical examination. Data is obtained (e. g. , via calculations or interpolation) based on the measurements.
