Philosophy:
I am a radiation oncologist with a special expertise in the treatment of prostate cancer using brachytherapy (radiation delivered by seeds implanted directly in the tumor) and intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT -- a form of 3-D conformal radiation therapy). Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center has one of the largest clinical experiences with IMRT for prostate cancer, and we have demonstrated excellent outcomes as well as reduced side effects with this approach. We have also developed new 3-D conformal computer-optimized intraoperative planning techniques for prostate brachytherapy that has significantly improved the accuracy of seed implant therapy and further reduced treatment side effects in patients treated over the past five years at Memorial Sloan-Kettering. For seed implants, we have recently integrated magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy into our intraoperative computer-planning systems to pinpoint the delivery of concentrated radiation doses to documented abnormal regions within the prostate gland.** Currently, I am the Editor-in-Chief of Brachytherapy -- a medical journal that addresses all aspects of this sub-specialty -- and Chairman of the National Patterns of Care Study for Genitourinary Cancers.

Intraoperative Dynamic Dosimetry For Prostate Implants

US Patent:
2004009, May 13, 2004
Filed:
Nov 8, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/292383
Inventors:
Marco Zaider - Bronx NY, US
Dorin Todor - Richmond VA, US
Michael Zelefsky - New York NY, US
Assignee:
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center - New York NY
International Classification:
A61N005/00
US Classification:
600/001000
Abstract:
A method for treating a prostate gland comprises the steps of implanting therapeutic seeds in the prostate gland of a patient; imaging the implanted seeds with an imaging probe; calculating the three-dimensional locations of the implanted seeds and measuring the dosimetry of the implanted seeds; calculating optimal locations for additional seeds to provide an optimal post-implant dosimetric measurement; and implanting additional seeds in the optimal locations. The method may implement computer hardware and software.
