Methods And Apparatus For Operating Gas Turbine Engines

US Patent:
7254950, Aug 14, 2007
Filed:
Feb 11, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/056973
Inventors:
Narendra Joshi - Cincinnati OH, US
Michael Reale - Milford OH, US
James K. Prochaska - Spring TX, US
Joseph D. Peters - Houston TX, US
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Schenectady NY
International Classification:
F02C 7/143
US Classification:
60728, 415179
Abstract:
A method for operating a gas turbine engine, including a first compressor, a second compressor, a combustor and a turbine, coupled together in serial flow arrangement, and an intercooler coupled between the first compressor and the second compressor, the intercooler including a first heat exchanger and a second heat exchanger. The method includes channeling compressed airflow from the first compressor to the first heat exchanger, extracting energy from the compressed airflow using a first working fluid flowing through the first heat exchanger to facilitate reducing an operating temperature of the compressed airflow and to facilitate increasing an operating temperature of the first working fluid, and channeling the first working fluid to a process heat exchanger, and channel the compressed airflow form the first heat exchanger to the second compressor.

System And Method For District Heating With Intercooled Gas Turbine Engine

US Patent:
2005012, Jun 9, 2005
Filed:
Dec 5, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/728415
Inventors:
Michael Reale - Milford OH, US
Narendra Joshi - Cincinnati OH, US
International Classification:
B60H001/02
US Classification:
237012100
Abstract:
A system where heat energy is recovered from an intercooled gas turbine engine. This system comprises: (a) at least one gas turbine engine; (b) a compressed air stream that receives energy from the at least one gas turbine engine; (c) at least one intercooler that extracts the energy from the compressed air stream, and (d) at least one heating district. In this system, the at least one intercooler and the at least one heating district is connected by a fluid circulating loop to transfer the extracted energy from the at least one intercooler to the at least one heating district.. Another embodiment involves a method for controlling the ratio of heat energy to output shaft energy removed from an operating intercooled gas turbine engine, which comprises the step of: varying the amount of energy removed by at least one intercooler from a flowing gas stream of the gas turbine engine.

Gas Turbine Engine Assembly And Method Of Assembling Same

US Patent:
8584464, Nov 19, 2013
Filed:
Dec 20, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/312225
Inventors:
Narendra Digamber Joshi - Cincinnati OH, US
Michael Eugene Michael - Cincinnati OH, US
Michael Joseph Reale - Milford OH, US
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Schenectady NY
International Classification:
F02C 1/00, F02C 6/04
US Classification:
60726, 60728, 60785
Abstract:
A method for assembling a gas turbine engine assembly includes providing a core gas turbine engine including a high-pressure compressor, a combustor, and a high-pressure turbine, and coupling a low-pressure compressor between the core gas turbine engine and a motor such that the low-pressure compressor is driven only by the motor.

Gas Turbine Cooling Systems And Methods Of Assembly

US Patent:
7685827, Mar 30, 2010
Filed:
Sep 10, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/852802
Inventors:
Michael Joseph Reale - Milford OH, US
Narendra Digamber Joshi - Cincinatti OH, US
David Paul Wolf - West Chester OH, US
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Schenectady NY
International Classification:
F02C 3/30, F02C 7/143
US Classification:
60775, 60 3953, 60728
Abstract:
A method for operating a gas turbine engine, including a first compressor, a second compressor, and a turbine, coupled together in serial flow arrangement. The method includes channeling compressed airflow discharged from the first compressor through an intercooler having a cooling medium flowing therethrough, operating the intercooler such that condensate is formed in the intercooler from the compressed airflow, and channeling the condensate to an inlet of the first or second compressor to facilitate reducing an operating temperature of the gas turbine engine.
