Temporary Canopy For Small Watercraft

US Patent:
5070807, Dec 10, 1991
Filed:
Aug 2, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/562496
Inventors:
Michael L. Lewis - Panama City FL
Assignee:
The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Navy - Washington DC
International Classification:
B63B 1700
US Classification:
114361
Abstract:
This invention is a lightweight, potentially expendable, temporary canopy sembly for small open type watercraft. The thin resilient battens are interconnected in the form of a bowed longitudinal ridge member having a plurality of shorter length, transversely disposed, longitudinally spaced, bowed rib members connected therewith, with the free ends of the battens, inserted through D-ring type attachment means provided on the inner periphery of the watercraft, while exerting frictional tension against the craft's gunwales areas. A flexible Nylon type cover comprised of selectively joinable half sections is used as the protective canopy. It uses preferably complementally mateable hooks and loops type manual fastener means, such as Velcro. RTM. complemental fastener strips, to provide the selective attachment and detachment of the two halves over the bowed center ridge member, and also to detachably secure the canopy perimeter portions to the gunwale areas. The canopy half portions are adapted to be furled down from the center ridge and retained against the side gunwale areas by overlaid portions of a preexisting gunwale area peripherally extended safety line or cargo tie down rope.

Multi-Mission Ballistic Resistant Jacket

US Patent:
5060314, Oct 29, 1991
Filed:
Apr 3, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/504522
Inventors:
Michael L. Lewis - Panama City FL
Assignee:
The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Navy - Washington DC
International Classification:
F41H 102
US Classification:
2 25
Abstract:
An improved ballistic resistant soft body armor jacket that is fit-adjuste, relatively lightweight, multi-mission adaptable, buoyant, fire-resistant, non hydroscopic and impervious to salt water and most petroleum-based fluids. The jacket shell consists of four basic ballistic resistant components: a back panel, left and right front panels in combination with side portions, and a permanent collar. It is of wrap around character and uniquely provides a minimum of one inch overlap of the respective fabric-encased ballistic inserts at both sides and in the front. It uses hook and loop type fasteners, such as Velcro. RTM. , in combination with some elasticized fastener bands to provide essentially one handed capability of the various closure and adjustability features. It uses non-hydroscopic material, such as Spectra Shield. RTM. , for the ballistic inserts, and a fire proof fabric, such as Nomex III. RTM.

Illumination And Communication Device

US Patent:
5670942, Sep 23, 1997
Filed:
Dec 13, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/354993
Inventors:
Michael L. Lewis - Panama City FL
Assignee:
The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Navy - Washington DC
International Classification:
G08B 1318
US Classification:
340555
Abstract:
A transparent and impervious sphere containing encapsulated within the elronics and power source for providing non-visible infrared illumination and communication in various military and non-military applications and denied-access environments. The illumination and communication light source is invisible infrared provided by light emitting diodes mounted near and equally spaced about the circumference of each of two orthogonally intersecting circular-shaped and fully encapsulated printed circuit boards. The autonomous encapsulated power source is rechargeable using an inductively coupled probe introduced to a port in the sphere. An external magnet operates encapsulated magnetic field switches to change mode of operation of the invention, including "ON", "OFF", CONTINUOUS, STROBE, and Morse modes, and to change the Morse coding.

Underwater Multi-Mode Night Vision Apparatus

US Patent:
H16454, May 6, 1997
Filed:
Jan 3, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/368836
Inventors:
Michael L. Lewis - Panama City FL
International Classification:
H01L 3100
US Classification:
250330
Abstract:
An underwater night vision apparatus employing a night vision device for enhancing images illuminated solely by ambient light and an LED illuminator for provision of invisible infrared light to supplement ambient light. A catadioptric lens is used to increase optical efficiency and becomes the cover of a recessed compartment in the apparatus and in the optical path between the lens and the night vision device. The compartment fills with non-turbid seawater when the lens is changed underwater. The entrapped seawater constitutes a lens which contributes to the overall image enhancement.
