Method And Apparatus For Hair Removal

Method And Apparatus For Hair Removal

US Patent:
6080146, Jun 27, 2000
Filed:
Feb 24, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/028416
Inventors:
Gregory Altshuler - Beverly MA
Michael Smotrich - Andover MA
International Classification:
A61B 1818
US Classification:
606 9
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for the removal of, and at least inhibiting the regrowth of, unwanted hair by applying optical radiation to the follicle, including the hair shaft therein, of an energy, a duration and wavelength to enhance the optical absorption characteristics of at least some component, (i. e. , melanosomes, tissue, etc. ) of the follicle without appreciably damaging skin outside the follicle; and subsequently applying optical radiation to the follicle of a wavelength which is more readily absorbed by the components of the follicle having optical absorption characteristics enhanced during step (a) then by unenhanced components and of an energy and duration to heat such enhanced components sufficiently to substantially destroy the follicle. For preferred embodiments, melanosomes in the bulb of the follicle, and in other portions of the follicle are heated by the initial optical radiation sufficiently to at least partially darken such melanosomes by browning or carbonization, and such darkening also occurs in tissue surrounding the melanosomes. While a single pulse may be utilized to perform this function, it is preferably performed by a succession of pulses, with each successive pulse darkening additional components of the follicle.

Method And Apparatus For Treating Pseudofolliculitis Barbae

US Patent:
2004023, Nov 18, 2004
Filed:
Feb 19, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/783987
Inventors:
Gregory Altshuler - Wilmington MA, US
Ilya Yaroslavsky - Wilmington MA, US
Andrei Erofeev - N. Andover MA, US
Michael Smotrich - Andover MA, US
Assignee:
Palomar Medical Technologies, Inc. - Burlington MA
International Classification:
A61N001/00
US Classification:
607/088000
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for hair treatment are disclosed which comprise applying electromagnetic radiation (EMR) to a skin treatment area to deposit energy in one or more hairs so as to modify a shape and/or chemical structure of at least a portion of the hairs. The applied radiation can cause heating of the hair tips, so as to modify their shape, e.g., reduce sharpness of the hair tips. Modification of the hair can involve heat-induced changes to the shape, composition, or function of the hair tip, hair shaft, and/or hair matrix that make the hair less capable of re-entering the skin. The methods and apparatus can treat and/or prevent pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB) in the treatment area. A method is also disclosed for managing hair growth using wavelengths between 1200 nm and 1400 nm.
