Filed:
Dec 30, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/367804
Inventors:
Ernest P. Greer - Grand Rapids MI
Robert J. Luchetti - Cambridge MA
David A. Shipman - Grand Rapids MI
Jack A. Tanis - Grand Rapids MI
Gregg Robert Draudt - Watertown MA
Anne C. Ackerly - Cambridge MA
Michael Tingley - Portland OR
Assignee:
Steelcase Inc. - Grand Rapids MI
International Classification:
E04B 274
US Classification:
522207
Abstract:
An integrated prefabricated furniture is provided for finishing or fitting-out open plan building spaces, such as for offices, classrooms, hotels/motels, conference centers, medical treatment facilities, etc. A demountable architectural wall system covers the fixed walls of the building room, a portable partition wall system defines the interior space into individual work settings, and a demountable movable wall system forms custom width partitions. The three wall systems are completely compatible and fully integrated in both function and appearance, and provide similar utility raceways at common heights, as well as interchangeable cover panels. A modular column cover system selectively covers the support columns in the building room, and provides vertical utility routing and storage that integrates with the raceways in the wall systems. Pre-assembled facades, the freestanding storage case system, a space frame system, a prefabricated low raised floor construction, a modular overhead link head system, and accessories are disclosed and are designed and are designed to be used anywhere throughout the furniture system, and to serve to personalize the various individual work settings to accommodate specific users and tasks. Advantageously, the furniture system is readily reconfigurable.

Filed:
Mar 18, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/272043
Inventors:
Ernest P. Greer - E. Grand Rapids MI
Robert J. Luchetti - Cambridge MA

Assignee:
Steelcase Development Inc. - Grand Rapids MI
International Classification:
E04B 282
US Classification:
522207
Abstract:
An integrated prefabricated furniture system is provided for fitting-out a building space of the type having a generally open plan interior defined by fixed walls. The furniture system includes a wall-covering frame, freestanding partition frames, and floor-to-ceiling frames that can be interconnected to subdivide the building space. The wall-covering frame is constructed to be positioned against and selectively cover portions of the fixed walls, and the portable partition system and the floor-to-ceiling frames are constructed to spatially divide the building space into a plurality of work areas, with at least one of the freestanding partition frames having an end abutted against the wall-covering frame. A plurality of cover panels is removably attached to the wall-covering frame and to the freestanding partition frames for covering the wall-covering frame, the freestanding partition frames, and the floor-to-ceiling frames. The integrated prefabricated furniture system further includes additional systems for completely furnishing a building space, including an overhead framework system, a raised floor system, a column-covering system, a system of pre-assembled facades, an overhead link head system, and a storage wall system.

Abstract:
A wall structure for dividing building space includes several different freestanding base panels such as an internally open partition panel, a sound-deadening partition panel, a glass-supporting partition panel, and a doorway-supporting partition panel, and further includes an overhead system comprising a structural expressway construction, a transom subframe, covers for the subframe, and a glass module attachable to the subframe. The structural expressway construction has a torque box bracket for moving support from an inboard location spaced from the vertical side edge of the base panels to the vertical side edge. The transom subframe mounts atop the different base panels, and telescopingly extends into mating engagement with a ceiling channel. The opening between the ceiling channel, the top of the structural expressway construction, and the transom subframes can be selectively covered with either covers or a window subassembly that releasably engages structure on the ceiling channel, the structural expressway construction and the subframes.
