Regulating Vehicle Cabin Environment And Generating Supplemental Electrical Current From Waste Heat

US Patent:
2007027, Nov 29, 2007
Filed:
May 24, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/753187
Inventors:
Joseph Sims - Greeneville TN, US
Martin Eason - Johnson City TN, US
William Hemphill - Johnson City TN, US
International Classification:
H01L 35/34, H01L 35/28, H01L 35/30
US Classification:
136201000, 136203000, 136205000
Abstract:
A method and system for environmental control and supplementary power generation in conventional and hybrid vehicle applications is presented. A thermoelectric heat pump function regulates vehicular interior temperature environments and uses the waste heat from a vehicles engine to power thermocouples and generate supplemental electrical current to power electrical devices. Thermocouples are used to gauge changes in temperature. The Peltier Effect is used to provide both primary cabin environmental control and supplementary power generation for motorized vehicle applications. Thermoelectric generators can be used for both primary internal climate control and supplementary power generation in the vehicular environment. Thermoelectric heat pumps' special characteristics are used to provide (a) primary cabin environment control including cooling, heating, dehumidifying, defrosting, pre-heating/pre-cooling and (b) supplemental DC power generation functions for conventional fossil fueled and/or biomass-fueled vehicles as well as emerging hybrid or all electric vehicle applications.

Dry Heat Sterilizing Systems Using Inductive Heating

US Patent:
2011021, Sep 1, 2011
Filed:
Feb 28, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/036556
Inventors:
William K. Hemphill - Johnson City TN, US
Martin P. Eason - Johnson City TN, US
Martin Olson - Johnson City TN, US
J. Paul Sims - Greeneville TN, US
Assignee:
State of Franklin Innovations, LLC - Johnson City TN
International Classification:
A61L 2/03, B01J 19/08
US Classification:
422 22, 42218606
Abstract:
A dry heat sterilizing system for use in sterilizing non-ferromagnetic and/or ferromagnetic parts includes a sterilization chamber and at least one ferromagnetic structure within the sterilization chamber. At least one inductive EMF energy field generator inductively heats the at least one ferromagnetic structure during a sterilization operation. The at least one ferromagnetic structure is in thermal communication with the non-ferromagnetic and/or ferromagnetic part during a sterilization operation to transfer heat from the ferromagnetic structure to the non-ferromagnetic and/or ferromagnetic part.

Surgical Simulator System

US Patent:
2007016, Jul 19, 2007
Filed:
Jan 16, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/623716
Inventors:
William K. Hemphill - Johnson City TN, US
J. Paul Sims - Greeneville TN, US
Martin E. Olsen - Johnson City TN, US
Martin P. Eason - Johnson City TN, US
Sheldon R. Davis - Nashville TN, US
International Classification:
G09B 23/28
US Classification:
434262
Abstract:
Disclosed is a surgical simulator for teaching, practicing, and evaluating surgical techniques. Such a simulator may comprise a cassette of organs, blood vessels, and tissues that may be disposable. The simulator also comprises a hemodynamic simulator and a frame assembly, the frame assembly providing support for the cassette of organs as well as a fluid conduit through which simulated blood flow from the hemodynamic simulator may be connected to the blood vessels of the organs and related tissues. The hemodynamic simulator provides adjustable and variable pressures to the arteries and veins, as well as variable pulse rates, which can be programmed at settings chosen by an instructor or user.

Ceramic-Encased Hot Surface Igniter System For Jet Engines

US Patent:
8434292, May 7, 2013
Filed:
Dec 17, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/957984
Inventors:
Martin P. Eason - Johnson City TN, US
William K. Hemphill - Johnson City TN, US
Martin E. Olsen - Johnson City TN, US
J. Paul Sims - Greeneville TN, US
Assignee:
State of Franklin Innovations, LLC - Johnson City TN
International Classification:
F02C 7/264, F23N 5/00
US Classification:
60 39821, 431 66
Abstract:
A ceramic-encased hot surface igniter system for jet engines is presented. The advanced ceramic-encased hot surface igniter system comprises at least one electrical resistance heated element encased in a durable, thermal and mechanical shock resistant, high temperature advanced ceramic compound such as silicon nitride. The one or more advanced ceramic-encased hot surface igniter elements are mounted proximally upstream or within a combustion chamber of a jet engine enclosure or within the afterburner section of a jet propulsion engine's exhaust. The surface temperature of each ignition element's encasement being of sufficient temperature to cause the ignition of a gaseous, atomized, or liquid fuel.
