2008001, Jan 17, 2008
Filed:
Jun 29, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/477214
Inventors:
Mark Alan Hopkins - Mission Viejo CA, US
David Lloyd Williams - Newport Beach CA, US

System And Method For Controlling Fluid Flow In An Aspiration Chamber

System And Method For Controlling Fluid Flow In An Aspiration Chamber

US Patent:
2008014, Jun 19, 2008
Filed:
Dec 18, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/612214
Inventors:
Mark Alan Hopkins - Mission Viejo CA, US
Shawn X. Gao - Irvine CA, US
International Classification:
A61M 1/00
US Classification:
604318, 604319
Abstract:
Embodiments of the present invention provide an apparatus and method controlling the flow of aspiration fluid in an aspiration chamber of a surgical cassette. One embodiment of the present invention provides an aspiration chamber having an aspiration port positioned at or close to the bottom of the chamber. When the aspiration fluid enters the aspiration chamber from below the fluid surface (e.g., from a port located at the bottom or on a sidewall close to the bottom), it does not create disturbance at the liquid/air interface and thus does not disturb the continuous level sensing. Also, since the aspiration port is placed at or very close to the bottom of the aspiration chamber, the liquid inside the chamber can be fully used for sustained reflux and push priming.

Adjustable Pneumatic System For A Surgical Machine

Adjustable Pneumatic System For A Surgical Machine

US Patent:
8162000, Apr 24, 2012
Filed:
Dec 13, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/610275
Inventors:
Denis Turner - Vista CA, US
Argelio Olivera - Mission Viejo CA, US
John Huculak - Mission Viejo CA, US
Mark Hopkins - Mission Viejo CA, US
Assignee:
Novartis AG - Basel
International Classification:
F16K 31/12
US Classification:
1374875, 137102, 137613
Abstract:
A pneumatic system for a surgical machine includes a reservoir, first and second proportional valves, and a controller. The reservoir holds pressurized gas. The first proportional valve is located on an input side of the reservoir and allows a variable amount of pressurized gas to enter the reservoir. The second proportional valve is located on an output side of the reservoir and allows a second variable amount of pressurized gas to exit the reservoir. The controller controls the operation of the first and second proportional valves. The controller adjusts the first and second proportional valves so that a constant gas pressure range is maintained at an output of the reservoir over a first range of input gas pressures and a second range of gas usage.

Pressure Monitor For Pneumatic Vitrectomy Machine

Pressure Monitor For Pneumatic Vitrectomy Machine

US Patent:
2008014, Jun 19, 2008
Filed:
Dec 15, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/611443
Inventors:
Argelio Olivera - Mission Viejo CA, US
Mark Hopkins - Mission Viejo CA, US
Denis Turner - Vista CA, US
Assignee:
ALCON, INC. - Hunenberg
International Classification:
A61F 9/007
US Classification:
604 22
Abstract:
A system for a pneumatically-powered vitrectomy machine includes an output port, a venting valve, a venting manifold, a pressure transducer, and a controller. The output port provides pressurized gas to a vitrectomy probe. The venting valve is located close to the output port. The venting manifold fluidly connects the venting valve to a venting port. The venting port vents pressurized gas from the venting manifold. The pressure transducer is located near the output port. The pressure transducer is configured to read a pressure of a gas near the output port. The controller is adapted to receive information about the pressure and activate the venting valve. When the information received from the pressure transducer indicates a fault condition, the controller directs the venting valve to open.
