Method And Apparatus For Shielding Medical Personnel From Radiation

US Patent:
2011024, Oct 13, 2011
Filed:
Mar 31, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/935722
Inventors:
James Goldstein - Bloomfield Hills MI, US
Mark A. Fox - Leesburg IN, US
Assignee:
ECO CATH-LAB SYSTEMS, INC. - Bloomfield Hills MI
International Classification:
G21F 3/02, G21F 3/00
US Classification:
2505191, 2505151
Abstract:
Systems and methods for shielding medical personnel from radiation are provided. A radiation-shielding barrier is positioned between the medical personnel and the radiation source. The radiation-shielding barrier includes an opening such that a portion of the table extends through the opening in the barrier. Medical personnel are protected from secondary radiation transmitted through the patient via a special layering technique of a first, flexible sterile drape, a flexible radiation-resistive drape, and a second flexible sterile drape. The system includes an upper shield and a lower shield of independent movement and a linking mechanism between the two, while maintaining the radiation seal. The system also includes a mechanism for maintaining the radiation barrier between the upper shield and the patient aperture hoop, preventing a radiation gap from forming between the flexible portions of the system (e.g. flexible drapes, curtains, etc.) and the non-flexible portions of the system (e.g. upper shield, lower shield, radiopaque transparent window, etc.).

James Goldstein - Bloomfield Hills MI, US
Assignee:
ECO Cath-Lab Systems, Inc. - Woods Cross UT
International Classification:
G21F 3/02, G21F 3/04, G21F 7/00, G21F 3/00, G21F 1/00, G21F 5/00, G21K 1/00, G21C 11/00, G02B 5/00, H01J 1/52, H01J 3/00, H01J 5/18, H01J 29/46
US Classification:
2505151, 2505051, 2505171, 2505191
Abstract:
A radiation protection system for protecting medical personnel from radiation being applied from a radiation source to a patient positioned on a table. The system includes a shield for positioning above the table having an inner frame sized and shaped for receiving the patient when the patient is positioned on the table, and a plurality of rods extending outward from the inner frame. The shield also has an outer frame surrounding the inner frame and connected to the plurality of rods, and a radiopaque flexible panel attached to the rods.

Prosthetic Device With Spacers

US Patent:
4566138, Jan 28, 1986
Filed:
Apr 24, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/725504
Inventors:
Edward L. Lewis - South Bend IN
Jack E. Parr - North Webster IN
Mark A. Fox - Leesburg IN
Robert L. Fuson - Warsaw IN
Assignee:
Zimmer, Inc. - Warsaw IN
International Classification:
A61F 104
US Classification:
623 22
Abstract:
A prosthetic device adapted to be secured to a supporting bone by a thickness of acrylic bone cement. The prosthetic device has an outer surface which includes a plurality of spacers projecting therefrom. The spacers are made of an acrylic material, such as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), and are adapted so that when the prosthetic device is positioned against the supporting bone, the spacers provide a uniform space between the bone and prosthetic device, thus uniformly controlling the thickness of cement. The acrylic spacers will repolymerize and bond with the layer of acrylic bone cement. The nature of the bond formed between the new acrylic bone cement and the acrylic spacers should eliminate the stress concentrations at the interface between the spacers and the cement layer, thereby enhancing fixation of the prosthesis.

Abstract:
Apparatus and methods for cutting through a layer of material. Some embodiments pertain to the removal of an orthopedic cast in a manner that is quiet and generates little or no particulate matter. In yet other embodiments there are a pair of toothed wheels that press down and penetrate into the cast and then split the cast by moving it past a sharp edge. In some embodiments the cutting head is reversible for the cutting of material in either of two opposite directions.
