Molded Rotor Blocking And Other Molded Articles Of Manufacture

US Patent:
6486575, Nov 26, 2002
Filed:
Jan 16, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/760694
Inventors:
Mark Lee Miller - Orlando FL 32817
International Classification:
H02K 346
US Classification:
310 43, 310270, 310214, 310 52
Abstract:
A molded rotor block, as well as other molded articles of manufacture, are made from a resin material selected from the group consisting of epoxy thermosets, polyester thermosets, phenolic, and melamine; and a reinforcement material selected from the group consisting of glass and mineral filler. The article of manufacture is adapted to withstand temperatures that range from about -40° C. to about 180° C. -40° C. and to withstand centrifugal loading at about 1500 RPM to about 4500 RPM while functioning as an insulator. The molding operation provides many advantages over CNC machining and other manufacturing methods.

Heat Tack Application For Use With The Manufacture Generator Rotor Coils And Other Components

US Patent:
6837949, Jan 4, 2005
Filed:
Sep 26, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/963279
Inventors:
Mark Lee Miller - Orlando FL, US
Assignee:
Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation - Orlando FL
International Classification:
H01B 1306
US Classification:
156 52, 1563069, 174110 R, 174120 R
Abstract:
A heat tack application involves arranging an adhesive between a strand of conductive material and a strand of insulation material; applying a temperature of about 100-300° C. and a pressure of about 5-100 psi for about 5-120 seconds to tack the adhesive. A stack can thereby be formed, and a plurality of stacks assembled to form a nascent rotor coil that is subsequently arranged in a rotor slot. An applied temperature of about 100-500° C. and a pressure of about 100-1,500 psi can fully cure the adhesive after the coil is arranged within the rotor slot. Depending on the context of use, the conductive material may more generally be a first component, and the insulation material may more generally be a second component.

Device And Method For Forming Support Systems For Electric Generator Components

US Patent:
2005003, Feb 17, 2005
Filed:
Aug 15, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/644562
Inventors:
William Jones - Oviedo FL, US
Mark Miller - Orlando FL, US
International Classification:
H02G003/08
US Classification:
174052100
Abstract:
A device for producing a workable material usable to form supports for supporting components, which may be stator coils, in a generator. In at least one embodiment, the supports may be braces positioned between adjacent stator coils. The device may include a housing having a heater for heating a workable material. The workable material may be received through a tube coupled to the housing. The workable material may be heated to a minimum temperature and ejected from the device using an ejector. The ejector may be controlled using a trigger coupled to the housing or to a handle coupled to the housing. The device may eject a workable material into a void between adjacent generator components, such as stator coils, to provide a formed in place support structure for limiting movement of the coils during operation of the generator.

Methods For Making Slot Cell Insulation And Slot Cell Insulation Produced Thereby

US Patent:
2003022, Dec 4, 2003
Filed:
May 31, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/158955
Inventors:
Mark Miller - Orlando FL, US
Assignee:
Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation
International Classification:
B32B003/04
US Classification:
428/122000
Abstract:
A method is for making slot cell insulation for positioning in a rotor slot between rotor windings and adjacent portions of the rotor of a dynamoelectric machine . The method may include providing a male mold having an outer shape corresponding to the rotor slot, stacking a plurality of layers adjacent the male mold, and laminating the stacked layers together on the male mold to thereby form the slot cell insulation . The stacked layers may include a pair of aromatic polyamide layers and a polyimide layer therebetween. These layers may be prelaminated, that is, laminated together prior to the overall lamination of the layers. Each aromatic polyamide layer may be NOMEX® paper, for example. In addition, the polyimide layer may be a corona-resistant polyimide layer, such as a KAPTON® CR layer.

Adjustable Fit Wedges

US Patent:
7081695, Jul 25, 2006
Filed:
Dec 13, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/734820
Inventors:
Mark Miller - Orlando FL, US
Assignee:
Siemens Power Generation, Inc. - Orlando FL
International Classification:
H02K 5/00, H02K 1/22
US Classification:
310 91, 310214, 310270, 29458, 29596
Abstract:
The present invention provides for a fitted wedge wherein a formed outer frame is loosely fitted into a desired gap. The formed outer frame contains a lateral gap such that the formed outer frame is substantially or completely divided into two halves. A thin, stiff sheet coated with a resin saturated felt is then inserted between the two halves of the outer frame. The two halves are pushed apart, snuggly fitting the formed outer frame into place. The resin in the felt is then cured, forming a single, snuggly fit wedge.
