Method And Apparatus For Anchoring A Tool Within A Cased Borehole

US Patent:
6119782, Sep 19, 2000
Filed:
Aug 12, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/132917
Inventors:
Mario J. Flores - Houston TX
Aaron G. Flores - Sugar Land TX
Mark Hinton - Sugar Land TX
John C. Ratcliff - Missouri City TX
Assignee:
Gas Research Institute - Chicago IL
International Classification:
E21B 3312, E21B 4701
US Classification:
166382
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for anchoring a tool within a cased borehole wherein at least one piston connected with respect to the tool includes an associated anchor shoe. The anchor shoe has a penetration means, such as a plurality of wheels having a sharp outer periphery, for engagement with the cased borehole. A packer having a rigid component, such as a plurality of concentric rings, is connected with respect to the tool, opposite the piston. The packer may also have a sealing member for creating a sealed engagement between the tool and the cased borehole. When the piston is extended, the anchor shoe contacts the cased borehole and centers the tool with respect to the cased borehole. When the piston is extended, the packer also engages the cased borehole and maintains the position of the tool as well as creating a sealed connection between the tool and the cased borehole.

Method And Apparatus For Drilling With A Flexible Shaft While Using Hydraulic Assistance

US Patent:
5687806, Nov 18, 1997
Filed:
Feb 20, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/603307
Inventors:
Alan Sallwasser - Houston TX
Kenneth Havlinek - Missouri City TX
Thomas D. MacDougall - Sugar Land TX
Miles Jaroska - Richmond TX
Duane LaDue - Sugar Land TX
Wayne A. Tyler - Pearland TX
Mario Flores - Houston TX
Mark L. Hinton - Sugar Land TX
Thomas D. Svoboda - Pasadena TX
Michele Tesciuba - Houston TX
Assignee:
Gas Research Institute - Chicago IL
International Classification:
E21B 416, E21B 708, E21B 1720
US Classification:
175 62
Abstract:
An apparatus and method are disclosed for applying thrust (weight on bit) to a drill bit when drilling with a flexible drilling shaft while creating perforations in a cased well. The thrust is applied directly to the drill bit instead of applying it to the drill bit through the flexible drilling shaft. A support bracket is also in contact with a piston and is in slidable contact with the tool housing. A portion of the piston is positioned inside a chamber in the housing and is slidably attached to the chamber walls. As hydraulic fluid flows into the chamber opposite the piston, the piston is forced toward the drill bit. As the piston moves toward the drill bit, force is exerted on the support bracket which causes the bracket to move toward the drill bit. This force is transferred to the drill bit during the drilling process, thereby supplying the force (weight on bit) needed by the drill bit to effectively drill through a desired material.

Method And Apparatus For Changing Bits While Drilling With A Flexible Shaft

US Patent:
5746279, May 5, 1998
Filed:
Feb 20, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/602485
Inventors:
Kenneth Havlinek - Missouri City TX
Thomas D. MacDougall - Sugar Land TX
Alan Sallwasser - Houston TX
Miles Jaroska - Richmond TX
Duane LaDue - Sugar Land TX
Wayne A. Tyler - Pearland TX
Mario Flores - Houston TX
Mark L. Hinton - Sugar Land TX
Thomas D. Svoboda - Pasadena TX
Michele Tesciuba - Houston TX
Assignee:
Gas Research Institute - Chicago IL
International Classification:
E21B 2906, E21B 43112
US Classification:
175 52
Abstract:
An apparatus and method are disclosed for the removal and replacement of the used drill bit after each perforation through casing, cement, and into rock while using a flexible drive shaft. This apparatus involves both a bayonet-style "quick connector" between the flexible shaft and the drill bit and a cartridge that holds the drill bits while they await their turn to be used. The apparatus also has a means for indexing the cartridge so that the flexible shaft can have access to each of the drill bits in the cartridge. The method disclosed involves the process of connecting the flexible shaft to the drill bit at the start of the perforating process, the disconnecting of the used bit at the end of the perforation, and the indexing of the cartridge so that the next drill bit is in line with the flexible shaft for the next perforation.
