A lifelong Chicagoan, Dr. Manoj Mehta performed his medical school studies, medical residency, and gastroenterology fellowship at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in the west side medical campus. While most students covet the "private practice" residencies, Dr. Mehta elected to do rotations at Cook County Hospital to expand his exposure to various types of pathology. As a University of Chicago faculty member, he is active in the training and education of Evanston Hospital and University of Chicago residents and fellows. Dr. Mehta's interests include therapeutic endoscopy, obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, pancreatic and biliary procedures, bowel stenting, and management of complicated reflux disease. He has advanced training in small bowel capsule endoscopy, and performs these procedures for all the physicians in our practice. Dr. Mehta is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology and serves as a consultant to the American Board of Internal Medicine, writing and reviewing board examination questions. He is a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association. Dr. Mehta serves as a team gastroenterologist for Northwestern University athletes. He has lectured on a variety of subspecialty gastroenterology topics for various audiences. Dr. Mehta recently completed a research project using the "Third-Eye Retroscope"--a second, rear-viewing camera to enhance detection rates of colorectal polyps. Results from this study suggest this technology will prove to be the gold standard in polyp detection. In the summer of 2009, Dr. Mehta traveled to Cambodia and Vietnam and had the opportunity to visit rural, underserved, medical clinics. He presented cases and images to the Evanston Hospital medical residents as part of his annual lecture on Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage. Dr. Mehta is a firm believer in patient education and patient participation in health care decisions. He will typically lay out his thinking on a specific case, the available options, and help the patient to arrive at a treatment decision using a team approach. Dr. Mehta has an office practice in Kenilworth and performs endoscopic procedures at Evanston and Glenbrook Hospitals.
