Punch Myringotomy System And Method

US Patent:
5026378, Jun 25, 1991
Filed:
Nov 9, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/434076
Inventors:
Manning M. Goldsmith - Savannah GA
International Classification:
A61B 1732
US Classification:
606109
Abstract:
An otological vent tube is supported on an apparatus that performs a myringotomy and substantially simultaneously positions the vent tube in the resulting myringotomy incision. The vent tube has proximal and distal ends and includes a central lumen that extends the full length of the tube. In all embodiments of the invention the distal end includes a distal flange in the form of a truncated cone. In some embodiments a proximal flange is provided at the proximal end, and in other embodiments the proximal flange is eliminated. The myringotomy and positioning apparatus includes an immovable outer hollow sleeve and an axially displaceable inner shaft. The distal end of the shaft is conical in form and supports the vent tube such that the distal conical end of the shaft member forms a substantial continuation of the truncated conical surface of the vent tube distal flange. The substantially continuous conical surfaces of the vent tube distal flange and the distal end of the shaft facilitates incising the tympanic membrane and insertion of the distal vent flange through the incision in a single continuous movement to install the vent tube in the membrane. The shaft is withdrawn from the vent tube while the vent tube is retained in the installed position in the tympanic membrane.

Adjustable Prosthetic Device For Vocal Cord And Method

US Patent:
5197982, Mar 30, 1993
Filed:
Oct 15, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/776822
Inventors:
Manning M. Goldsmith - Savannah GA
Bruce W. Pearson - Jacksonville FL
International Classification:
A61F 220, A61F 204
US Classification:
623 9
Abstract:
An adjustable prosthetic device for a vocal cord includes an actuator member for locating a paralyzed vocal cord in a predetermined phonation position. The device further includes a support member for supporting the actuator member in a predetermined position proximate the paralyzed vocal cord. A fluid input/withdrawal station for introducing or removing fluid from engagement with the actuator member enables the actuator member to change the location of the paralyzed vocal cord from a first predetermined phonation position to another selected position. In several embodiements of the invention the actuator member is a fluid expandable shell. In other embodiments of the invention the actuator member is a piston-expandable bellows and a movable ratchet member. The support member that supports the actuator member can be hung onto a thyroid cartilage or passed through the thyroid cartilage. The fluid input/withdrawal station can be provided adjacent the thyroid cartilage or loacted remote from the thyroid cartilage.

Transcanal Cochlear Implant System

US Patent:
2004009, May 13, 2004
Filed:
Aug 6, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/636084
Inventors:
Byron Boylston - Holden Beach NC, US
Manning Goldsmith - Savannah GA, US
International Classification:
A61N001/18
US Classification:
607/057000
Abstract:
A magnetic field modulation system for a cochlear implant: The magnetic field modulation system receives audible tones and processes the tones into radio frequency signals that are received by a radio frequency coil system. The radio frequency coil system has a transmitting coil and a receiving coil wound in a plurality of configurations. The transmitting coil is implanted in the ear canal wherein it receives processed radio frequency signals. The receiving coil is implanted into the middle ear wherein it receives the radio frequency signals from the transmitting coil. The receiving coil is hermetically sealed inside an enclosure wherein it receives and demodulates the radio frequency signal. Audio electrical signals are extracted from the demodulated radio frequency signal and delivered to the cochlea via an electrode. The audio electrical signals are received by the human brain via the nerves from the cochlea.

Nasal Packing Device

US Patent:
5139510, Aug 18, 1992
Filed:
Feb 22, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/659012
Inventors:
Manning M. Goldsmith - Savannah GA
George C. Robertson - Ponte Vedra Beach FL
Assignee:
Xomed-Treace Inc. - Jacksonville FL
International Classification:
A61M 3100
US Classification:
606196
Abstract:
The nasal packing device includes a splint portion, an airway member secured to the splint portion and a flexible expandable membrane secured to the airway member. An inflation chamber is thus defined between the flexible expandable membrane and the airway member. Under this arrangement, expansion of the membrane is in a direction away from the airway member enabling the membrane to provide a substantially uniform pressure against the splint portion and against any portions of the nose which the membrane comes into contact with. A uniform compressive force provided by the expandable membrane is thus attainable within the nasal passageway to arrest intranasal bleeding, while the splint supports the septum and the airway member allows nasal breathing.
