Inventors:
Lin Guo - Milpitas CA
Dennis Chen - Milpitas CA
Matthew OHara - Oakland CA
Assignee:
Maxtor Corporation - Longmont CO
International Classification:
G11B 2116
US Classification:

Abstract:
A slider support structure is disclosed for minimizing off-rack due to disk flutter. In one embodiment, the slider support structure includes a gimbal assembly ( ). The assembly ( ) includes an outer ring ( ) and an inner ring ( ). The outer ring ( ) is connected to the inner ring ( ) via narrow strips ( and ) adjacent to the front ( ) and back ( ) surfaces of the slider body ( ). The inner ring ( ) is attached to the left ( ) and right ( ) surfaces of the slider body ( ) via narrow strips ( and ). The strips ( and ) interconnecting the inner ring ( ) and outer ring ( ) define a flexible hinge that allows the slider body ( ) to pivot relative to the assembly ( ) about an axis ( ) which, in this case, is the roll axis. Similarly, the strips ( and ) define a flexible hinge which allows the slider to pivot relative to the assembly ( ) about another axis ( ) which, in this case, is the pitch axis. The axes ( and ) are disposed close to the lower surface of the slider so that head off-track associated with such pivotal is minimized.

Suspension Load Beam For Disk Drive Actuator With Notch For Reducing Spring Rate

US Patent:
6687091, Feb 3, 2004
Filed:
Jan 13, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/341929
Inventors:
Lin Guo - Milpitas CA
Assignee:
Maxtor Corporation - Longmont CO
International Classification:
G11B 2116
US Classification:
3602448
Abstract:
A suspension load beam for an actuator assembly of a disk drive includes a bend radius portion with a spring rate that is less than 18 Newtons per meter, a first bending mode that is greater than 3,500 Hertz, and a first torsion mode that is greater than 5,300 Hertz. The method of making this suspension load beam includes cutting a sheet of material to form a flat suspension load beam including a bend radius portion, removing material in the bend radius portion from full thickness, inspecting the bend radius portion to determine its thickness, and removing material from the bend radius portion and/or from the main body of the suspension load beam to compromise the performance difference due to thickness variation in bend radius portion.

Disk Drive With Variable Tpi Servo Tracks

US Patent:
6493176, Dec 10, 2002
Filed:
Apr 24, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/556709
Inventors:
Youping Deng - Sunnyvale CA
Lin Guo - Milpitas CA
Assignee:
Maxtor Corporation - Longmont CO
International Classification:
G11B 5596
US Classification:
360 7805, 360 7808, 360 48
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to utilizing the capabilities of multi-stage actuators in disk drives to write servo tracks that have a variable number of tracks-per-inch (TPI) from head to head, thereby improving both the performance of the drive and manufacturing yields. An appropriate TPI for a particular head has been found to depend on a number of factors that vary from head to head. Consequently, the initial step is to determine an appropriate TPI for at least one of the heads or, more preferably, all of the heads in the drive. The determination typically involves measurements such as read and write width measurements and off-track performance tests for the relevant heads. Once an appropriate TPI format has been determined, the servo tracks are written according to the TPI formats using either a servo track writer or self servo track writing.

Method And Apparatus For Partial Self-Servo Writing Using Servo Wedge Propagation

US Patent:
7355808, Apr 8, 2008
Filed:
May 23, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/439731
Inventors:
David M. Tung - Livermore CA, US
Lin Guo - Milpitas CA, US
Don Brunnett - Pleasanton CA, US
Assignee:
Maxtor Corporation - Scotts Valley CA
International Classification:
G11B 21/02
US Classification:
360 75
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for partial self-servo writing a disk surface in a disk drive using servo wedge propagation is provided. In one embodiment, servo information is written by a servo track writer near an outer diameter of the disk surface. The servo information is grouped into a x set of servo information and a x set of servo information. The disk drive's read head is used to read the x set of servo information in order to position the disk drive's write head to write servo information which is radially-aligned with the x set of servo information. Then, the disk drive's read head is used to read the x set of servo information in order to position the disk drive's write head to write servo information which is radially-aligned with the x set of servo information. The process is repeated on a track-by-track basis until servo information is written from the outer diameter of the disk surface to the inner diameter of the disk surface, as if it was entirely written by a servo track writer.

US Patent:
6975482, Dec 13, 2005
Filed:
Mar 5, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/794579
Inventors:
Lin Guo - Milpitas CA, US
Xiaoping Hu - San Jose CA, US
Assignee:
Maxtor Corporation - Longmont CO
International Classification:
G11B005/55
US Classification:

Abstract:
An actuator control system and method for a hard disk drive comprising first and second actuators that support a head relative to a disk is disclosed. The actuator control system comprises a first stage, a second stage, a memory device, and a maximum stroke calculator. The first stage displaces the first actuator relative to the disk. The second stage displaces the second actuator relative to the first actuator. The memory device stores at least one data value indicative of a predicted response of the second stage. The maximum stroke calculator generates a predicted maximum stroke based on the at least one data value stored by the memory device. The second stage is deactivated when the disk drive initiates a seek operation. The second stage is reactivated based on a comparison of the predicted maximum stroke with a position of the second actuator.

Disk Drive Head Touchdown Detection With Improved Discrimination

US Patent:
7158325, Jan 2, 2007
Filed:
Nov 8, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/984559
Inventors:
Xiaoping Hu - San Jose CA, US
Yu Sun - Fremont CA, US
Lin Guo - Milpitas CA, US
Don Brunnett - Pleasanton CA, US
Assignee:
Maxtor Corporation - Scotts Valley CA
International Classification:
G11B 15/18
US Classification:
360 69
Abstract:
A disk drive detects head touchdown based on a magnitude of a position error signal at a discrete frequency. The discrete frequency is one-half the disk rotation frequency or an integral multiple of the disk rotation frequency. The head is heated by turning on a heater at the discrete frequency, thereby injecting bias into a servo system that increases the PES magnitude. In addition, the servo system has a first transfer function for tracking the head during read and write operations and a second transfer function for tracking the head during head touchdown detection. The second transfer function has smaller vibration rejection than the first transfer function so that the disk drive is less sensitive to vibration during read and write operations than during head touchdown detection.

Inventors:
David Hyunchul Shim - Milpitas CA, US
Jong-Min Lin - Cupertino CA, US
Lin Guo - Milpitas CA, US
Assignee:
Maxtor Corporation - Longmont CO
