Abstract:
According to the invention, there is provided a trial implant comprising a modular bracket defining a structure having an internal surface adapted to be seated on the distal aspect of a resected femur bone and an external surface with a shape resembling the normal distal condyle of the femur. The bracket has an elongated central opening appointed to expose the resected bone of the femur, including a pair of tracks for guiding a tool along a predetermined path for controlled shaping of a patellar groove in the bone exposed through the opening. An end mill guide cooperates with the bracket to receive another tool to form a deep recess for accommodating a posterior-stabilizing housing. After the recess is formed, the guide is replaced with an insert having a posterior-stabilizing housing which covers the opening of the bracket and articulates with a proximal aspect of the tibia during interoperative trial reduction of the knee joint. Removal of the bracket from the resected bone is unnecessary following the shaping steps prior to performing the trial reduction.

Filed:
Mar 17, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/818277
Inventors:
Leo A. Whiteside - Chesterfield MO
Stephen E. White - Ballwin MO
International Classification:
A61B 1756
US Classification:
606 74
Abstract:
A bone cable strap and surgical instruments pass the cable strap around a bone, tension it, fasten it and trim the excess cable. The surgical instruments include: a cable passer which has an arcuate guiding member having a groove facing the bone to guide the cable around the bone; a cable tensioner having concentric tubular members with a cable clamp at one end, a nipple at the other end, and a handle in between such that turning the handle spreads the cable clamp away from the nipple; and a combination cable crimper-cutter having jaws with both crimping and cutting edges. The cable strap is comprised of a flexible cable having a ferrule pre-affixed to one end. The cable is passed under the bone using the cable passer. The free end of the cable is passed through the ferrule and the cable tensioner is used to draw the cable tight around the bone. The crimper-cutter is then used to fasten the ferrule in place about the cable and trim the excess cable.

Method And Apparatus For Shaping A Proximal Tibial Surface

Method And Apparatus For Shaping A Proximal Tibial Surface

US Patent:
4467801, Aug 28, 1984
Filed:
Mar 9, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/473464
Inventors:
Leo A. Whiteside - Chesterfield MO
Assignee:
Wright Manufacturing Company - Arlington TN
International Classification:
A61F 504
US Classification:
128303R
Abstract:
The present invention provides a method and apparatus for preparing the proximal surface of a tibia to receive a proximal tibial prosthesis employing a reamer/alignment guide which is used to internally locate the central long axis of the tibia and a plateau planar which cooperatively engages with a guide handle attached to the reamer/alignment guide to accomplish the shaping of the proximal tibial surface. The reamer/alignment guide has a rod portion extending into the interior of the tibial shaft whose central long axis corresponds with the central long axis of the tibia. The guide handle is concentric with that rod portion such that the plateau planar assumes the proper alignment with respect to the central long axis of the tibia such that the proximal tibial surface is shaped relative to that axis in a simple and accurate manner.

Abstract:
An acetabular component for a hip replacement system comprises an acetabular shell, and a liner having a seal for insertion into the acetabular shell. In the preferred embodiment, the shell has a smooth tapered surface in its peripheral inner surface, and the liner has several annular ridges protruding from its outer surface. Upon insertion of the liner into the shell, the annular ridges of the liner come into sealing engagement with the smooth tapered surface of the shell. This sealing engagement substantially prevents a migration of debris along an interface of the liner with the shell. The liner is provided with several peripheral tabs for interference fit with several peripheral notches in the shell. An interlock comprising another liner ridge and a shell groove, provide a positive engagement to hold the liner in the shell as it bottoms therein. In an alternative embodiment, each notch is provided with protruding lips which project into the notch and firmly grasp one of the tabs of the liner upon insertion of the liner into the shell.

Tray And Liner For Joint Replacement System

US Patent:
2003001, Jan 16, 2003
Filed:
Dec 19, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/025733
Inventors:
Leo Whiteside - Chesterfield MO, US
Assignee:
Whiteside Biomechanics, Inc.
International Classification:
A61F002/38
US Classification:
623/020320
Abstract:
An orthopedic component for total joint replacement that comprises a metal tray () and polymer liner (), the metal tray having screw holes () for fixation with screws () to bone and a circumferential rim or wall () with a smooth inner surface (). The liner () is provided with a flexible sealing ridge () around its entire periphery, the sealing ridge being positioned so that it sealingly engages the tray rim so as to form a fluid-tight seal between the liner and the tray. The liner is provided with a locking mechanism comprised of tabs at the longitudinal ends of the liner which engage grooves in the front and rear of the tray. In this manner, the surgeon can readily install the liner within the tray after the tray has been surgically affixed to the resected skeletal structure by angling the liner and inserting a first tab into its respective groove and then by pressing the liner downwardly into the tray so that another tab at the opposite end of the liner engages its respective groove thus positively locking the liner with respect to the tray. Simultaneously with snap locking the liner within the tray, the flexible sealing ridge on the tray seals the liner with respect to the tray.
