Method For Removing And Reclaiming Excess Paint From A Paint Spray Booth

US Patent:
5334255, Aug 2, 1994
Filed:
Jul 15, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/915041
Inventors:
Lawrence E. James - Grosse Ile MI
William C. Walsh - Archbold OH
Assignee:
BASF Corporation - Parsippany NJ
International Classification:
B08B 700, C09D 900, C11D 750
US Classification:
134 38
Abstract:
Methods for removing and reclaiming excess paint from a paint spray booth includes entraining over-sprayed paint particles in a stream of air passing though the pain spray booth and causing the entrained over sprayed paint particles to come into contact with a flowing flood sheet within the paint spray booth such that a substantial portion of the paint particles are solubilized within the flowing aqueous flood sheet and are thereby removed from the stream of air. The solubilized paint particles are then separated and collected from the aqueous flood sheet so as to be reclaimed for future use, whereas the aqueous flood sheet is then recycled to the paint spray booth after the paint particles have been separated therefrom. To permit the reclamation of paint particles, the flood sheet includes an aqueous paint carrier having at least one of an aprotic heterocyclic oxygenate, a C. sub. 4 -C. sub. 6, lactone or a cyclic carbonate together with at least one organic solvent.

Method For Removing And Reclaiming Excess Uncured Paint From A Paint Spray Booth

US Patent:
5641361, Jun 24, 1997
Filed:
Jan 25, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/591264
Inventors:
William C. Walsh - Archbold OH
Lawrence E. James - Grosse Ile MI
Assignee:
BASF Corporation - Mt. Olive NJ
International Classification:
B08B 500, B01D 4702, C09D 904, C11D 750
US Classification:
134 38
Abstract:
Excess uncured paint is removed and reclaimed from a paint spray booth by bringing an air stream in which uncured paint particles are entrained into contact with a flowing aqueous flood sheet within the paint spray booth. A substantial portion of the uncured paint particles are solubilized within the flowing aqueous flood sheet and thereby removed from the stream of air. The flowing flood sheet most preferably includes (i) between about 10 to 45 percent by weight of an N-methyl pyrrolidone; (ii) between about 15 to about 40 percent by weight of at least one alkyl glycol ether having 1 to 4 carbon atoms in its alkyl moiety; and (iii) about 0. 1 to about 2. 0 percent by weight of a non-ionic linear alcohol ethoxylate surfactant sufficient to reduce the flood sheet vapor pressure. Thereafter, the solubilized uncured paint particles are separated and collected from the aqueous flood sheet and thereby reclaimed for future use.

Method For Purification Of Butylene Oxide

US Patent:
4772732, Sep 20, 1988
Filed:
May 8, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/860842
Inventors:
Mao Y. Huang - Riverview MI
Lawrence E. James - Grosse Ile MI
Joseph F. Louvar - Lincoln Park MI
Ernst Langer - Ellerstadt, DE
Assignee:
BASF Corporation - Parsippany NJ
International Classification:
C07D30132
US Classification:
549542
Abstract:
The invention discloses a method for purifying butylene oxide by using an anion exchange resin and an adsorbent. The anion exchange resin removes acid and aldehyde impurities while the adsorbent removes water impurities from the butylene oxide. Depending upon the impurity level, the purification steps can be conducted singularly or in combination, and the process can proceed either batchwise in a reactor or continuously in a column. The ion exchange resin of the choice is a sulfonated macroreticular anion exchange resin and the adsorbent of choice is a molecular sieve.

Water-Based Paint Spray Booth Flood Sheets And Methods Of Reclaiming Paint Using The Same

US Patent:
5560860, Oct 1, 1996
Filed:
Jan 11, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/371390
Inventors:
William C. Walsh - Archbold OH
Lawrence E. James - Grosse Ile MI
Assignee:
BASF Corporation - Mt. Olive NJ
International Classification:
B01D 4702, C09D 904, C11D 750
US Classification:
252 60
Abstract:
A composition for reclaiming paint and volatile organic paint carrier from industrial paint spray booths without increasing VOCs has been developed. The improvement over the existing booths recirculating hydrophilic based fluids, is the inclusion of a water based solution containing about 10 to about 45 per cent by weight of one or more N-alkyl pyrrolidones, about 15 to 40 percent by weight of one or more alkyl glycol mono alkyl ethers, a surfactant present in the amount of about 0. 1 to 2. 0 percent by weight, and the balance water.

Abstract:
There is now provided a solvent cement having a total of less than 80 weight percent of solvents and a thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer as at least one of the resins dissolved in the solvent. The solvent mixture contains at least a 5- or 6-membered water miscible lactone or lactam such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) in an amount of 21 weight percent or less based on the weight of all the ingredients. The reduced solvent concentration assists in lowering VOC emissions while preserving the hydrostatic burst strength mechanical property required by ASTM D 2564-88.
