Filed:
Aug 19, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/194477
Inventors:
L. Stephen Buchanan - Santa Barbara CA, US
International Classification:
A61C 5/02, A61B 5/103
US Classification:
433224, 600590
Abstract:
An electronic device for locating the apex of a root canal within a tooth of a dental patient has a display screen on a display component to provide an image indicating when the apex of a root canal has been located. A free end of a first electrical lead is provided for placement within the root canal or in contact with an electrically conductive tool within the root canal. A free end of a second electrical lead is used to establishing a ground on a conductive portion of the dental patient such as a tissue surface within the mouth. The opposite ends of each of the leads is connected to the display component. Removeably attached to the display component is a lead carrier. The detachable lead carrier and the leads mounted thereon can be sterilized as a unit and then attached to the display component, which is bagged in a sterile barrier, for performing the apex locating procedure. The apex locator has one or more mounting structures for placing the display in a location adjacent the patients head, attached to adjacent instrumentation, or attached to the dental practitioner's hand or arm such that the display image is readily visible by the dental practitioner during the apex locating procedure.

Variable Land, Multiple Height Flute Contour Design For Endodontic Files

US Patent:
8408901, Apr 2, 2013
Filed:
Jul 25, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/493460
Inventors:
L. Stephen Buchanan - Santa Barbara CA, US
International Classification:
A61C 5/02
US Classification:
433 81, 433102
Abstract:
A tapered endodontic rotary file for shaping or cleaning a root canal in a tooth has one or more flutes spiraling along the length of the file. The diameters of the one or more flutes tapers in a non-uniform manner from a first diameter in a shank portion of the file to a smaller diameter in a tip portion of the file such that at least one flute region intermediate the shank portion and the tip portion has a diameter less than a straight line taper from the shank portion to the tip portion. The flutes can also be landed and the width of the lands can be varied along the length of the file. In particular, the width of the lands in the intermediate region are wider than the width in the tip or shank portion.

Motor Control System For Endodontic Handpiece Providing Dynamic Torque Limit Tracking Of Specific File Fatigue

US Patent:
6955536, Oct 18, 2005
Filed:
Sep 24, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/670102
Inventors:
L. Stephen Buchanan - Santa Barbara CA, US
International Classification:
A61C005/02
US Classification:
433 27, 435102, 435131
Abstract:
A system for establishing a cumulative history of stress factors encountered during use of an endodontic file and keeping track of such for a plurality of files so that the files can be re-used with confidence that a given file is as safe to use as a new file. Cost of file maintenance is significantly reduced and the likelihood of file breakage in use is minimized.

Dental Instruments For Use With Ultrasonic Handpieces

US Patent:
6722882, Apr 20, 2004
Filed:
Feb 14, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/367176
Inventors:
L. Stephen Buchanan - Santa Barbara CA
Assignee:
Earth City Technologies, Inc. - Fenton MO
International Classification:
A61C 107
US Classification:
433119, 433166
Abstract:
An ultrasonic dental instrument or tip is disclosed for performing endodontic procedures. The instrument has a hub adapted to be operatively coupled to the output of an ultrasonic handpiece and a shank portion extending from the hub. A first portion of the shank extends in a generally axial direction from the hub and tip portion extends from the first portion. The shank has a bend therein between the first portion and the tip portion ranging between about 90° and about 140°. One embodiment of the tip has an enlarged, bulbous free end, with the latter having an end face cross sectional area larger than the cross sectional area of the tip portion proximate the enlarged free end. The enlarged free end has an abrasive coating thereon so that upon activation of the instrument by the transducer, the tip portion and the enlarged free end vibrates in a plane including the shank and tip portions. Other embodiments of the tip have radiused ends so that they do not leave troughs or scratches in the canal which obfuscate canals.

A series of multi-tapered files is disclosed for endodontic use. The files comprise at least two sections, a first portion adjacent the tip of the file and a second portion adjacent the shank. The two portions have different tapers. The files are provided in sets of at least four with the tapers of the first portions of all of the files decreasing incrementally from the first to the last file of the set. In some of the sets, the tapers of the second portions are the same from file to file, being fixed at one of two selected tapers. In other sets, the tapers of the second portions increase from file to file as the tapers of the first portions decrease.
