During the spring of 2008 I wrote a grant proposal asking the University to fund a pilot project investigating the possibility of replacing the plastic bags used at all campus food outlets. I was granted $1450. Leading a team of three peers we researched alternatives to plastic bags finally settling on a sustainable, compact (stuffable), nylon bag made by ChicoBag™. We used the $1450 to purchase 500 of these ChicoBags™ and advertise the idea of their use to the students. We gave out the 500 bags to students at a specific food location and began collecting information on the benefits and barriers to the use of reusable bags rather than plastic ones. After gathering this information we presented our findings and recommendations to the University. The University honored our study by ordering over 5000 custom logo ChicoBags™ to be given out to all freshman and students living on campus in the fall of 2009.
