I try very hard to place myself in the patient's situation. That type of perspective allows me to see and hear their needs. It also allows me to present alternatives in a clearer way that the patient can appreciate. My other technique is to pretend that the patient is my sister or mother. How would I want my loved one to be treated? Those two perspectives help me to be a better listener.
