Stackable Guide Funnel System And Method

US Patent:
6766861, Jul 27, 2004
Filed:
Sep 19, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/247669
Inventors:
Kevin R. Koen - Cypress TX
Gilbert P. Mican - Sealy TX
Arjin Nolan - Houston TX
Kim H. Phan - Houston TX
Andrew H. Roberts - Houston TX
Assignee:
ABB Vetco Gray Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 33076
US Classification:
166345, 166349, 166366, 285 39
Abstract:
A subsea production system and method includes a wellhead field having multiple wellheads and utilizes a stackable guide funnel system for sequential tying back of those wellheads. A storage frame retains several guide funnels that are nestably stacked one upon the other. The frame is made up of a plurality of guide members that are secured to the exposed tubular conductor of a wellhead. A pair of annular rings surrounds portions of each of the guide members. A riser having a riser connector is lowered to the central location. The riser connector latches onto the uppermost guide funnel within the frame. The riser, together with the affixed funnel, is then lifted upwardly, removing the affixed funnel from the frame. The riser is then moved laterally through the sea until the funnel and riser are proximate a second wellhead within the wellhead field.

Small Diameter External Production Riser Tieback Connector

US Patent:
6540024, Apr 1, 2003
Filed:
May 25, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/865288
Inventors:
Joe Pallini - Tomball TX
Kim H. Phan - Houston TX
Gilbert P. Mican - Sealy TX
Assignee:
ABB Vetco Gray Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 2912
US Classification:
166348, 166359, 166347
Abstract:
A tieback connector includes a passive lower locking system and an active upper locking system to exert a positive locking force on the connection between a production riser and a high pressure wellhead. The tieback connector is composed of an outer housing which carries lower locking dogs, upper locking dogs and a piston. The piston is located above the lower end of the production riser and controls the movement of the outer housing. As the piston is stroked the outer housing cams the lower dogs into grooved profile in the wellhead housing. As the piston is stroked further the upper dogs exert a force onto the production riser that locks the riser to the wellhead housing.

Riser To Sleeve Attachment For Flexible Keel Joint

US Patent:
6422791, Jul 23, 2002
Filed:
Apr 4, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/542567
Inventors:
Kim Hoang Phan - Houston TX
Jerry Keith Rhodes - Conroe TX
Chii Ren Lin - Bellaire TX
Rickie Gene Wester - Houston TX
Rockford D. Lyle - Pinehurst TX
Assignee:
ABB Vetco Gray Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
F16F 114
US Classification:
4052242, 166355, 285224, 267154, 403221
Abstract:
An attachment extends between an outer sleeve and an inner riser pipe where the pipe penetrates the keel of a platform. In one version, the attachment is a conically-shaped with a small diameter ring that engages the riser pipe and a large diameter ring that engages the outer sleeve. This attachment has elements that are very flexible in bending but relatively stiff and strong in axial load. Other versions include flat rings where lateral load is taken directly into tension and compression in the beams, allowing for relatively high lateral load transfer. Both the conically-shaped attachment and the flat ring have a number of variations that provide low bending stiffness but high axial stiffness of the elements. Depending on whether resistance to axial loads, lateral loads, or resistance to combination of both loads is desired, the attachment and the flat ring may be used alone or in combination. Other variations of the device provide two opposing conical shaped attachments or a conical and flat ring attachment installed together to provide load capability in both axial and lateral directions while still providing angular flexibility.

Apparatus And Method For Torsional And Lateral Centralizing Of A Riser

US Patent:
6260625, Jul 17, 2001
Filed:
Jun 21, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/336929
Inventors:
Kim Phan - Houston TX
Gilbert Mican - Sealy TX
Jon Pelzl - New Braunfels TX
Jon VanBarneveld - Houston TX
Kent Harms - College Station TX
Assignee:
ABB Vetco Gray, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 33035
US Classification:
166355
Abstract:
A centralizing device is provided for a riser of an offshore well platform having an opening through which the riser passes from the platform to a subsea wellhead. The riser has generally planar fins extending radially outward from its outer diameter. The centralizing device has a frame which is mounted to the platform about the riser. A plurality of centralizing rollers are mounted to the frame and are radially extensible relative to the riser. The centralizing rollers bear against the riser and retain it laterally. A plurality of torsional rollers are mounted to the frame and are extensible towards the fins. The torsional rollers bear against the fins and retain the riser torsionally.
