System And Method For Spectral Shaping Of Dither Signals

US Patent:
6812876, Nov 2, 2004
Filed:
Aug 19, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/642736
Inventors:
Kevin Lee Miller - Lawrenceville GA
Assignee:
Broadcom Corporation - Irvine CA
International Classification:
H03M 300
US Classification:
341143, 341131
Abstract:
An improved dither generation circuit and method for digital audio circuits generates pseudo-random numbers that are then interpreted as 2s complement numbers representing data points of a bipolar signal. The random number signal is high-pass filtered to reduce the energy contained in the audio band. The resulting dither signal is applied to the circuit in its main feedback loop and is effective to prevent idle tones. Because of its spectrally shaped characteristic this dither signal introduces less noise into the audio band of interest and thereby improves the overall signal-to-noise ratio of the audio circuit.

Block Spectrum Receiver For A Broadband Communications System

US Patent:
5930231, Jul 27, 1999
Filed:
Mar 27, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/625399
Inventors:
Kevin L. Miller - Lawrenceville GA
Ramin Borazjani - Lawrenceville GA
Assignee:
Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. - Norcross GA
International Classification:
H04J 100, H04J 316
US Classification:
370210
Abstract:
A communication system for coupling telephony or other signals to a broadband network such as a CATV network. The system transmits a multiplex of telephony signals in the forward band of the broadband network, with individual signals directed to an addressed subscriber. Telephony signals returning from subscribers upstream to a headend unit (HIU) are modulated onto the reverse band of the broadband network in a frequency division multiple access (FDMA) arrangement. The upstream modulated telephony signals are received at a telephony network interface at the HIU coupled to the broadband network. A group of reverse band modulated telephony signals are received at a group receiver or channelizer. The group receiver processes all upstream telephony signals within a selected spectral subband in the reverse band to apply a receiver matched filter with a weighted overlap and add circuit, and are then converted to baseband by an FFT circuit. The group receiver provides a serial data stream representing the baseband telephony signals.

Dual-Pll Signaling For Maintaining Synchronization In A Communications System

US Patent:
7630468, Dec 8, 2009
Filed:
Oct 19, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/967201
Inventors:
Kevin Miller - Lawrenceville GA, US
Ray Whitehead - Suwannee GA, US
Assignee:
Broadcom Corporation - Irvine CA
International Classification:
H03D 3/24
US Classification:
375376, 327147
Abstract:
A communications management system introduces a low bandwidth phase locked loop (LoBW-PLL) working in tandem with a high bandwidth phase locked loop (HiBW-PLL). The LoBW-PLL only needs to follow the average frequency of the transported clock and not all of the excursions made by the master clock. During periods of downstream outage, the LoBW-PLL opens its loop and free wheels such that disturbances caused by a reacquisition do not impact the concept of time for the LoBW-PLL. After reacquisition, the LoBW-PLL and HiBW-PLL are compared to determine if a timing error has occurred. If a timing error is detected, the magnitude of the timing error is measured upon completion of the reacquisition cycle, and this measurement is used to correct the timing error.

Jul 20, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/489538
Inventors:
Bruce J. Currivan - Dove Canyon CA, US
Thomas J. Kolze - Phoenix AZ, US
Kevin L. Miller - Lawrenceville GA, US
Richard S. Prodan - Niwot CO, US
Jonathan S. Min - Fullerton CA, US
Assignee:
Broadcom Corporation - Irvine CA
International Classification:
H04J 13/06
US Classification:
714701, 375132
Abstract:
A system and method are used to provide uncorrelated code hopping in a communications system. A multi-bit linear shift register receives data and clocks the data fifteen times. A word assembler receives the shifted data and outputs a fifteen bit word. A mixer mixes the fifteen bit word with an numerical value of active codes to generate a mixed signal. A divider divides the mixed signal to produce a divided signal. A truncator truncates the divided signal to its seven most significant bits to produce a pseudo random hop number. A code matrix shifter circularly shifts the active codes in a code matrix based on the pseudo random hop number to produce a circularly shifted code. A transmitter transmits the circularly shifted code matrix.
