Borehole Pipe Side Entry Method And Apparatus

US Patent:
4388969, Jun 21, 1983
Filed:
Dec 1, 1980
Appl. No.:
6/211614
Inventors:
Gailen Marshall - Houston TX
C. H. Myska - Sugar Land TX
Kenneth E. Smith - Houston TX
Assignee:
NL Industries, Inc. - New York NY
International Classification:
E21B 1700
US Classification:
166242
Abstract:
A side entry apparatus for use in a drill string permits a wireline to be connected with tool apparatus within the pipe and passed to the exterior of the pipe intermediate the ends of the drill string so that sections of pipe may be added to the drill string without interrupting the connection and resulting communication between the wireline and tool apparatus to which it is connected. The side entry apparatus includes a housing having an opening through the wall of the housing. A sealing element is arranged to be positioned about the wireline, between the wireline and the opening. A jacking mechanism is used to compress the sealing element and thereby move it into sealing contact about the wireline. A piston like member acts against the interior side of the sealing element and due to a differential pressure existing across the interior and exterior of the pipe string, moves against the sealing element to compress the sealing element against a retainer held in position by the jack mechanism, to expand the sealing element into further sealing contact with the wireline. The elements of the apparatus forming the sealing function are arranged to be assembled over the wireline after the wireline is passed through the side entry opening in the housing wall.

Composite Materials Comprising Polar Polymers And Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes

US Patent:
6936653, Aug 30, 2005
Filed:
Mar 14, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/389256
Inventors:
Kenneth O. McElrath - Houston TX, US
Kenneth A. Smith - Houston TX, US
Thomas M. Tiano - Westford MA, US
Margaret E. Roylance - West Newton MA, US
Assignee:
Carbon NanoTechnologies, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
C08K003/04
US Classification:
524496, 524495, 4234473, 4234472, 423445 R
Abstract:
The invention relates to a composite comprising a weight fraction of single-wall carbon nanotubes and at least one polar polymer wherein the composite has an electrical and/or thermal conductivity enhanced over that of the polymer alone. The invention also comprises a method for making this polymer composition. The present application provides composite compositions that, over a wide range of single-wall carbon nanotube loading, have electrical conductivities exceeding those known in the art by more than one order of magnitude. The electrical conductivity enhancement depends on the weight fraction (F) of the single-wall carbon nanotubes in the composite. The electrical conductivity of the composite of this invention is at least 5 Siemens per centimeter (S/cm) at (F) of 0. 5 (i. e. where single-wall carbon nanotube loading weight represents half of the total composite weight), at least 1 S/cm at a F of 0. 1, at least 1×10S/cm at (F) of 0.

Carbon Nanotube Particulates, Compositions And Use Thereof

US Patent:
2005000, Jan 6, 2005
Filed:
Nov 21, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/719689
Inventors:
Kenneth McElrath - Houston TX, US
Yuemei Yang - Houston TX, US
Kenneth Smith - Houston TX, US
Xiaodong Hu - Katy TX, US
International Classification:
D01F009/12
US Classification:
423447300
Abstract:
A method for making carbon nanotube particulates involves providing a catalyst comprising catalytic metals, such as iron and molybdenum or metals from Group VIB or Group VIIIB elements, on a support material, such as magnesia, and contacting the catalyst with a gaseous carbon-containing feedstock, such as methane, at a sufficient temperature and for a sufficient contact time to make small-diameter carbon nanotubes having one or more walls and outer wall diameters of less than about 3 nm. Removal of the support material from the carbon nanotubes yields particulates of enmeshed carbon nanotubes that retain an approximate three-dimensional shape and size of the particulate support that was removed. The carbon nanotube particulates can comprise ropes of carbon nanotubes. The carbon nanotube particulates disperse well in polymers and show high conductivity in polymers at low loadings. As electrical emitters, the carbon nanotube particulates exhibit very low “turn on” emission field.

Composite Of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes And Aromatic Polyamide And Process For Making The Same

US Patent:
2004002, Feb 5, 2004
Filed:
Mar 31, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/403517
Inventors:
Xiaodong Hu - Houston TX, US
Kenneth Smith - Houston TX, US
Assignee:
CARBON NANOTECHNOLOGIES, INC.
International Classification:
B32B001/08
US Classification:
428/036900, 428/408000
Abstract:
A composite comprising single-wall carbon nanotubes and aromatic polyamide, can be made by suspending single-wall carbon nanotubes in an acid to form a nanotube-acid mixture, adding an aromatic polyamide to the nanotube-acid mixture and dispersing the single-wall carbon nanotubes in the polyamide to form a single-wall carbon nanotube-polyamide dope. The dope can be spun into a fiber or formed into a film. Acid can be removed from the composite. A preferred polyamide is poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide). Carbon nanotube-aromatic polyamide composites can be used in applications requiring material having high tensile strength and modulus, such as, structural reinforcement materials, protective elements in ballistic protection applications wherein the composite material absorbs impact energy of projectiles, fragments, or other energetic particles. Ballistic protection applications include armor for personnel, structures and vehicles.

Molecular-Level Thermal Management Materials Comprising Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes

US Patent:
2004001, Jan 22, 2004
Filed:
Feb 24, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/373638
Inventors:
Kenneth McElrath - Houston TX, US
Kenneth Smith - Houston TX, US
International Classification:
D01F009/12
US Classification:
423/447200
Abstract:
The present invention relates to devices, processes and materials comprising single-wall carbon nanotubes wherein the single-wall carbon nanotubes serve to transport heat to or from a nanometer scale region wherein that heat is generated or dissipated. Because of their small physical size, excellent heat conductivity, and relatively large surface area, single-wall carbon nanotubes are novel in their function as nanometer-scale agents for heat transport. Appropriately configured in association with a source of heat such as the catalyst for an exothermic polymerization reaction, single wall carbon nanotubes can effectively conduct heat away from the reaction site. This thermal management on a molecular level enables a new class of materials and processes in all areas where heat transport is important. Additionally, new materials such as improved polymer compositions are produced by processes that are thermally-managed at the molecular level by the objects of this invention.
