Doneil M. Dorado - Missouri City TX, US
Kenneth B. Nolen - Midland TX, US
Eric S. Oestreich - Richmond TX, US
Jeffrey J. DaCunha - Midland TX, US
Assignee:

International Classification:
G01V 1/40, G06F 17/40
US Classification:
702 6, 702187, 702188, 702189
Abstract:
An instrumentation system for assessing operation of a reciprocating pump system which produces hydrocarbons from a non-vertical or a vertical wellbore. The instrumentation system periodically produces a downhole pump card as a function of a directly or indirectly measured surface card and a friction law function from a wave equation which describes the linear vibrations in a long slender rod. A control signal or command signal is generated based on characteristics of the downhole pump card for controlling the pumping system. It also generates a pump and well analysis report that is useful for a pump operation and determination of its condition.

Inferred Production Rates Of A Rod Pumped Well From Surface And Pump Card Information

US Patent:
7212923, May 1, 2007
Filed:
Jan 5, 2005
Appl. No.:
10/940273
Inventors:
Sam G. Gibbs - Midland TX, US
Kenneth B. Nolen - Midland TX, US
Assignee:
Lufkin Industries, Inc. - Lufkin TX
International Classification:
G01V 9/00
US Classification:
702 13
Abstract:
A method for inferring production of a rod pumped well. Inferred production is estimated in a well manager which not only performs pump-off control with a down-hole pump card, but also estimates liquid (oil-water) and gas production using the subsurface pump as a meter. Methods are incorporated in the well manager for identifying and quantifying several conditions: pump leakage, unanchored tubing, free gas and oil shrinkage. Quantifying such conditions in the well manger enables accurate inferring of production thereby eliminating the need for traditional well tests.

Systems And Methods For Measuring A Fluid Level Within A Well

US Patent:
8261819, Sep 11, 2012
Filed:
Jan 20, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/354782
Inventors:
Sam Gavin Gibbs - Midland TX, US
Kenneth Bernard Nolen - Midland TX, US
International Classification:
E21B 21/08
US Classification:
16625003, 166370, 7315255
Abstract:
A method of determining a fluid level in a well space without substantial venting of gas to the atmosphere or injecting a gas at high pressure. Gas being produced by the well is used to create a pressure differential between two spaces. A wave is induced in the well space by causing the two spaces to come into gaseous communication for a selected time internal. Pressure changes are measured as the induced wave travels through the gas in the well space from the measurement system to a fluid surface and back to the measurement system to determine a round trip travel time of the wave. The fluid level is calculated from the round-trip travel time and a speed of the wave as one-half of the product of the wave speed and the round-trip time.

Oct 27, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/958175
Inventors:
Kenneth B. Nolen - Midland TX
International Classification:
E21B 4300, E21B 4704
US Classification:
166369
Abstract:
An acoustic method is disclosed for performing pump off control using fluid level in producing wells and other inaccessible cavities. The method uses flow induced pressure phenomena to locate the fluid level. Simplified equipment is involved and acoustic velocities can be measured externally from the well. The method applies to various artificial lift methods in which a conduit is accessible for measuring fluid level.
