Method For Measuring Activity Of A Specific Fraction Of Albumin

US Patent:
7968306, Jun 28, 2011
Filed:
Dec 12, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/334084
Inventors:
Francis H. C. Tsao - Madison WI, US
Keith C. Meyer - Middleton WI, US
Assignee:
Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation - Madison WI
International Classification:
G01N 1/00, G01N 33/53
US Classification:
435 721, 435 71, 436501, 436506, 436518, 424 111, 424 121
Abstract:
Methods of measuring the SFA and sPLAactivities in a mammalian subject are provided. The methods include: providing a substrate comprising a fluorescently labeled carboxylic acid and a negatively charged phospholipid in an organic solvent such as ethanol, mixing the substrate with phospholipase Aand a biological sample from the subject, and detecting the fluorescence intensity change to determine the SFA and sPLAactivity in the sample. A decrease in SFA activity in the test sample as compared to the SFA activity in the control sample indicates that the subject has developed or is about to develop inflammation. An increase in sPLAactivity in the test sample as compared to the sPLAactivity in the control sample indicates that the subject has developed or is about to develop inflammation. Further disclosed is a kit for practicing the above methods.

Method And Composition For Treating Sleep Apnea

US Patent:
2002009, Jul 25, 2002
Filed:
Dec 10, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/016474
Inventors:
Keith Meyer - Middleton WI, US
M. Badr - West Bloomfield MI, US
Assignee:
Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation - Madison WI
International Classification:
A61K031/685, A61L009/04
US Classification:
514/076000, 424/045000
Abstract:
Application of synthetic or naturally occurring lung surfactant to the posterior pharyngeal region prior to a period of sleep significantly reduces episodes of sleep disturbance resulting in apnea or hypopnea. The present invention provides lung surfactant in a convenient applicator container for easy use and storage. Incidents of oxygen desaturation are reduced, thereby lowering the risks of apnea-associated pathologies.
