Can Decorator Machine, Ink Station Assembly Therefor, And Can Decorating Method Employing Same

US Patent:
2012027, Nov 1, 2012
Filed:
Apr 27, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/094965
Inventors:
KARL FLEISCHER - Denver CO, US
Anthony Joseph Vella - Aurora CO, US
Assignee:
STOLLE MACHINERY COMPANY, LLC - Centennial CO
International Classification:
B41F 17/08, B41F 33/00, B41F 31/04
US Classification:
101 381, 101364, 101483
Abstract:
An ink station assembly is provided for a can decorator machine. The ink station assembly includes an ink fountain providing a supply of ink, a fountain roll, a distributor roll, a ductor roll cooperable with the fountain roll and the distributor roll, a number of oscillator rolls having longitudinal axis and oscillating back and forth along such axis, a number of transfer rolls cooperating with the oscillator rolls, a printing plate cylinder including a printing plate, and a single form roll cooperating with the printing plate cylinder to apply the ink to the printing plate. The diameter of the single form roll is greater than the diameter of the printing plate cylinder such that the printing plate cylinder makes a complete revolution before the single form roll makes a complete revolution. Accordingly, no portion of the single form roll contacts the printing plate more than once per revolution.

Redraw Mechanism For Can Body Maker Apparatus

US Patent:
5775160, Jul 7, 1998
Filed:
Apr 30, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/846745
Inventors:
Karl S. Fleischer - Denver CO
Behzad Bakhti-Suroosh - Evergreen CO
Assignee:
Aluminum Company of America - Pittsburgh PA
International Classification:
B21D 2404
US Classification:
72349
Abstract:
An improved can body maker apparatus has a redraw system of reduced mass. An air actuator is incorporated into the redraw motion assembly to maintain a cam actuated arm in contact with a cam surface during the reform cycle. A improved mechanical linkage eliminates the conventional redraw carriage. The redraw sleeve is supported within a fluid bearing mounted in a stationary housing.

Apparatus And Method For Printing Multi-Color Images Onto Cylindrical Body

US Patent:
5970865, Oct 26, 1999
Filed:
Feb 20, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/026920
Inventors:
Roland Horth - Blacksburg VA
Karl Fleischer - Denver CO
Paul Choate - Aurora CO
Craig Whipple - Ledyard CT
Assignee:
Mitsubishi Materials Corporation - Tokyo
International Classification:
B41F 1722
US Classification:
101 40
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for printing multi-color images onto a cylindrical body includes ink adhesion mechanisms that adhere different colors of ink to an outer peripheral surface of the cylindrical body. Ink drying mechanisms are included for drying the different colored inks adhered to the cylindrical body after the completion of the respective ink adhesion processes. Each of the ink adhesion mechanisms is arranged such that a mandrel, about which the cylindrical body is held, is moved in an arc along the outer periphery of a cylinder-shaped blanket which is disposed around the outer peripheral surface of an blanket cylinder. Ink is applied to the cylindrical body from the blanket at a position where the cylindrical body contacts the blanket. The blanket cylinder is rotated about an axis thereof in the direction opposite to the moving direction of the mandrel. The mandrel is rotated about an axis thereof so that a relative velocity of the cylindrical body and the blanket at the contact portion is zero.

Automatic Domer Positioning In A Bodymaker

US Patent:
2012030, Dec 6, 2012
Filed:
May 31, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/118895
Inventors:
KARL SCOTT FLEISCHER - Denver CO, US
Tracy Jay Fowler - Lakewood CO, US
International Classification:
B21C 51/00
US Classification:
72 201
Abstract:
In a can forming machine a system that determines the position of a reciprocating ram and allows for the domer to be repositioned automatically is provided. The system includes a punch position sensor assembly, a control system, and a domer positioning assembly. The punch position sensor assembly is positioned about the ram, preferably at the domer side of the last die. At this location, the punch position sensor assembly can determine the position of the ram as it enters the dieback during the return stroke. The control system receives data from the punch position sensor assembly and, if the ram is not substantially, concentrically aligned with the die pack on the return stroke, sends a signal to the domer positioning assembly to reposition the domer. This process may be repeated until the ram travels along a path substantially aligned with the die pack on the return stroke.

Self-Aligning Pivotable Mandrel Assembly

US Patent:
8596625, Dec 3, 2013
Filed:
Apr 26, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/456579
Inventors:
Karl Scott Fleischer - Denver CO, US
Assignee:
Stolle Machinery Company, LLC - Centennial CO
International Classification:
B25B 27/14, B25B 1/20, B23Q 1/25, B41F 17/08
US Classification:
269 55, 269 51, 269191, 292811, 101 381, 101376
Abstract:
A mandrel assembly for a can body can decoration machine is provided. The mandrel assembly includes a bearing assembly that creates a virtual pivot point whereby the mandrel may pivot relative to the supporting mandrel shaft. To allow the mandrel to pivot relative to the mandrel shaft, the bearing assembly is located at one location and is the only contact point between the mandrel and the mandrel shaft.
