A probe rod is inserted into a water main through a corporation cock. The rod has a plurality of transverse passages parallel to one another and aligned in the direction of flow. Within these transverse passages, in flush relationship to the passage walls, are inserted removable sampling rings. All but one of the rings are of the same material as the inner wall of the main. The remaining ring, used as a control, is a synthetic resin ring. The flush relationship prevents the formation of turbulent eddies at the ends of the rings. Consequently, microbial growth conditions on the rings themselves reliably simulate conditions on the interior wall of the main. Within a tubular extension on the exterior of the corporation cock an O-ring seal is provided. The length of the extension, and the position of the seal, are such that the probe rod can be partially withdrawn beyond the corporation valve without causing any of the transverse passages to pass through the O-ring. Thus, the rod can be partially withdrawn, and the corporation valve closed before the rod is fully withdrawn.

A method for minimizing localized corrosion of fluid containers that occurs as a consequence of most non-chemical procedures for removing scale deposits is described. It counteracts the unavoidable side-effect of the lowering of the local pH in the vicinity of the bubbles of CO. sub. 2 that are generated during an electromagnetically-induced controlled precipitation procedure. The method is a simple and facile procedure for curbing the localized corrosion occurring as a result of most non-chemical procedures for removing scales. The method is desirably performed by an induction coil wrapped around a fluid container such as a pipe encrusted with scale through which hard water is flowing. A pulsing electrical current is successively applied through the coil and halted, preferably for 3 to 10 minutes each. When the current is applied, a transitory induced magnetic field is generated in the solution, and scale encrusted on the fluid container dissolves in the solution.

An apparatus for removing undesirable compounds such as radon, volatile organics, hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide and methane from contaminated well water which utilizes a recirculating system which is selectively operable to decrease the contamination of the treated water below a given level wherein the contaminant removal is achieved by providing an interface between the radon contaminated water and air in order to allow the undesirable compounds such as radon, volatile organics, hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide and methane to move from the water into the air due to the greater affinity therefore. The apparatus is designed to be used with a conventional residential or small commercial water well supply system and maximizes radon removal preferably by aspirating or baffling a gravity feed radon removal system for water which may include passing thereof through mass transfer packing material. The apparatus includes an automated system for monitoring the level of accumulated treated water to further facilitate contaminant removal.
