A mouthwash composition for inhibiting the buildup of plaque on dental surfaces and preventing dental diseases consisting essentially of an aqueous solution of alkali metal chlorides as active agents wherein the active agents include 0.5 % to 8.0 % by weight of at least one of the alkali metal chlorides including CaCl, MgCland KCl, with the balance being water.
