Completion of phlebotomy course - 8 weeks of classroom instruction, which totaled to 100 hours of theory and laboratory. Laboratory section of class required 100 successful venipunctures to qualify for Samlands final exam. At Norwegian American Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, I performed antiseptic venipunctures and dermal punctures on patients; delivered specimens to all departments in proper and specific care that the specimen required including routine, timed, and emergency draws. I gained proficiency in using butterfly and multi-draw needles on patients ranging in age from 1 year to geriatrics; and drawing on geriatric behavioral patients, chemotherapy patients, and pregnant patients. I also gained experience/knowledge on panels, glucose tolerance tests, urine drug screens, and fecal collections. All of the latter performed in a high-volume environment. 120 hours of externship completed.
