Flexible Schemes For Applying Properties To Information In A Medium

US Patent:
6278462, Aug 21, 2001
Filed:
Feb 28, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/807345
Inventors:
Steven E. Weil - Bellevue WA
Michael B. Orr - Bainbridge Island WA
Joseph King - Seattle WA
Nathan W. Everett - Bellevue WA
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F 1500
US Classification:
345433
Abstract:
A scheme data structure is used for applying a set of coordinated attributes to any number of components within a composition such as a document, Internet web page, computer screen etc. A scheme data structure allows a user to easily apply variations of professionally designed font, color, graphic, paragraph and other schemes to a composition. The data structure includes a scheme instance category indicating a type of scheme and a number of attributes corresponding to the scheme instance category. The structure has a number of scheme slots, and each scheme slot can be associated with zero or more components of the composition. Each of the scheme slots is arranged to hold a distinct value for each of the attributes. Thus, for each of the scheme slots, the scheme instance data structure may be used to apply values of attributes to the components of the composition associated with each scheme slot. Each scheme instance data structure may also have a number of levels.

System And Method For Generating Embedded Resource Updates For Output Device

US Patent:
2005026, Nov 24, 2005
Filed:
May 19, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/848072
Inventors:
Joseph Ternasky - Mountain View CA, US
Robert Parker - San Jose CA, US
Michael Byrd - Bellevue WA, US
Adam Eversole - Redmond WA, US
Joseph King - Seattle WA, US
Michael Stokes - Eagle ID, US
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F009/44
US Classification:
717172000
Abstract:
A system and related techniques generate an update to control programming, such as firmware, to embed in an electronic document and transmit to a printer, facsimile or other output device. Compatible printers or other output devices according to embodiments of the invention may contain an intermediate language interpreter which receives, interprets and executes the embedded update in the electronic document. That update may include for example an update to the printer's firmware, downloaded forms, fonts or other updates or enhancements which may for instance stored into EPROM or other memory in the output device. Because the resource update is encapsulated in an intermediate language object which may be universally interpreted by compatible printers, facsimile machines and other devices, updates may be delivered with a need to generate specialized code or follow specialized procedures for specific manufacturer's products.

The contact information identifies one or more transport modes for communication with the contact. In some embodiments, the computing device receives a request from a user to communicate with the contact via at least one selected transport mode. Based on the received request, the computing device provides an input field within the contact card. In other embodiments, the transport mode is automatically selected and the input field is displayed. Data from the user is received into the input field for communication to the contact. The computing device sends the data received into the input field to the contact via the selected transport mode. Strategies For Presenting A Sequence Of Messages To A User

US Patent:
8122086, Feb 21, 2012
Filed:
Nov 1, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/264817
Inventors:
Joseph King - Seattle WA, US
Christopher W. Goodrum - Seattle WA, US
Daniel R. Dole - Seattle WA, US
Assignee:
Amazon Technologies, Inc. - Seattle WA
International Classification:
G06F 15/16, G06F 3/048
US Classification:
709206, 709219, 715804, 715805
Abstract:
Functionality is described herein for presenting a sequence of messages to the user arranged in chronological order. The functionality additionally annotates the messages with identifiers. Some of the identifiers convey the manner in which the identified messages relate to other messages in the sequence. The functionality therefore uniquely combines the merits of both a flat paradigm for organizing messages (by virtue of the arrangement of the messages in chronological order) and a nested paradigm for organizing messages (by virtue of the linking identifiers added to the messages).
