Catv Telephony System Using Subsplit Band For Both Directions Of Transmission

US Patent:
5488413, Jan 30, 1996
Filed:
Jun 14, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/259479
Inventors:
Joseph M. Elder - Boulder CO
Donald L. Bise - Parker CO
Terry D. Bolinger - Aurora CO
Peter Ruether - Longmont CO
Assignee:
XEL Communications, Inc. - Aurora CO
International Classification:
H04N 7173
US Classification:
348 13
Abstract:
A cable television (CATV) system is modified to provide two-way telephone communications in a subsplit band below the video signal, preferrably in the range of approximately 5-40 MHz. Each line amplifier in the coaxial cable network is equipped with a bypass strap or bypass circuitry to maintain a signal path through the line amplifier for the telephone signal in the event of failure of the line amplifier. Due to the decreased attentuation resulting from its lower frequency, the telephone signal can typically travel the distance of three or four line amplifier spacings without amplification. Line amplifier failure is a common occurrence in CATV networks. Therefore, the present invention greatly increases the reliability of telephone communications over CATV networks.

Access Gateway Management System

US Patent:
2014002, Jan 23, 2014
Filed:
Sep 27, 2013
Appl. No.:
14/039843
Inventors:
Joseph Marcus Elder - Boulder CO, US
Assignee:
AZTEK NETWORKS, INC. - Frisco TX
International Classification:
H04L 12/24
US Classification:
370352
Abstract:
An Access Gateway Management System (AGMS) allows telephone operating companies to transition their existing wireline customers over to Voice over the Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology without having to invest in new workflow processes, systems, or maintenance facilities by adapting the Operational Support Systems interfaces currently employed for managing legacy circuit-switched switching systems to manage Line Access Gateways (LAGs), which are the generic line termination systems employed in VoIP infrastructure. The AGMS also configures and adapts metallic loop test systems currently deployed for the purpose of routine maintenance and troubleshooting of subscriber lines terminating directly or indirectly (through access systems) on existing switching systems to continue to provide this functionality when the lines terminate on LAGs. Synchronization of the subtended LAGs is coordinated with the legacy network by the AGMS.
