High Performance Retractable Half-Wave Antenna

US Patent:
2007012, May 31, 2007
Filed:
Nov 30, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/290195
Inventors:
Alejandro Candal - Davie FL, US
Julio Castaneda - Coral Springs FL, US
Jose Gonzalez - Pembroke Pines FL, US
Lorenzo Ponce De Leon - Lake Worth FL, US
Francis Staszesky - Fort Lauderdale FL, US
International Classification:
H01Q 1/24, H01Q 1/36
US Classification:
343702000, 343895000
Abstract:
An antenna () that includes a first helical radiator () and a second helical radiator () positioned substantially co-linear with the first helical radiator. The first helical radiator can be communicatively linked to a signal source (). The second helical radiator can be moveable between a first position wherein the second helical radiator is substantially adjacent to the first helical radiator and a second position wherein the second helical radiator is distal from the first helical radiator. The first helical radiator and the second helical radiator can cooperate to transmit and/or receive electromagnetic signals using an electrical connection and/or electromagnetic coupling. The electromagnetic coupling can primarily include capacitive coupling. The antenna also can include an impedance tuning member () which electromagnetically couples to the first helical radiator and/or the second helical radiator.

Antenna Assembly And Method Of Operation Thereof

US Patent:
7420516, Sep 2, 2008
Filed:
Oct 11, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/247527
Inventors:
Alejandro Candal - Davie FL, US
Aaron R. Allen - Pembroke Pines FL, US
Jose M. Gonzalez - Pembroke Pines FL, US
Francis M. Staszesky - Fort Lauderdale FL, US
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
H01Q 1/24
US Classification:
343702
Abstract:
The invention concerns an antenna assembly () and a method () of operation thereof. In one arrangement, the antenna assembly can include a first antenna element () and a second antenna element (), electrically disconnected from the first antenna element and a switching element () to selectively connect the first antenna element and the second antenna element. In another arrangement, the method can include the steps of sliding () the switching element to a first position to operate the antenna assembly in a first mode of operation and sliding () the switching element to a second position to operate the antenna assembly in a second mode of operation. As an example, in the first mode of operation, the antenna assembly can operate as a one-half wavelength antenna. In the second mode of operation, the antenna assembly can operate as a quarter wavelength antenna.

Selecting An Optimal Antenna According To An Operating State Of A Device

US Patent:
2006020, Sep 14, 2006
Filed:
Mar 14, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/079415
Inventors:
Sergio Bustamante - Pembroke Pines FL, US
Raziuddin Ali - Weston FL, US
Brian Bucknor - Miramar FL, US
Jose Gonzalez - Pembroke Pines FL, US
Tal Mor - Coral Springs FL, US
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
H04B 1/02, H04M 1/00, H04B 1/06
US Classification:
455101000, 455575700, 455272000
Abstract:
A device () has a housing assembly having a plurality of housing portions which can shift relative to each other, a plurality of antennas () distributed among the plurality of housing portions, a receiver (A) coupled to the plurality of antennas for receiving signals carrying information from a source, and a processor () coupled to the receiver. The processor is programmed to sense () one or more operating states of the device, and identify () from the one or more operating states an antenna from the plurality of antennas having a probability higher than the other antennas for successfully receiving information from the source.
