Method And Composition For Treating Metal Surfaces Including Dispersed Silica

Method And Composition For Treating Metal Surfaces Including Dispersed Silica

US Patent:
5905105, May 18, 1999
Filed:
Sep 18, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/714303
Inventors:
Lawrence E. Jones - Reading PA
Jose B. Rivera - Philadelphia PA
Michael D. Wert - Laureldale PA
Assignee:
Bulk Chemicals, Inc. - Reading PA
International Classification:
C08K3/36;3/16
US Classification:
524413
Abstract:
A method and composition for treating metal surfaces to improve corrosion resistance and paint adhesion. The composition is a non-corrosive aqueous solution including water, a polymeric compound, an additive, and dispersed silica. In a preferred embodiment, the polymeric compound may be a polymer having a plurality of carboxylic functional groups and a plurality of hydroxyl groups. The polymeric compound may be a bifunctional copolymer or the reaction product of a first polymer having a plurality of carboxylic functional groups (e. g. , polyacrylic acid or polymethylvinylmaleic anhydride), and a second polymer having a plurality of hydroxyl groups (e. g. , polyvinyl alcohol). The additive is selected from at least one of: (i) an acid of a group IV-B element and a weak base, and (ii) an ammonium salt of a group IV-B compound such as ammonium zirconium carbonate. An exemplary acid of a group IV-B element is fluotitanic acid and an exemplary weak base is ammonium hydroxide. Dispersed silica is added, and any attack of the silica is minimized.

Method And Composition For Indicating The Presence Of Chrome-Free Pretreatments On Metal Surfaces By Fluorescence

Method And Composition For Indicating The Presence Of Chrome-Free Pretreatments On Metal Surfaces By Fluorescence

US Patent:
5516696, May 14, 1996
Filed:
Sep 13, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/305195
Inventors:
Jose B. Rivera - Philadelphia PA
Assignee:
Bulk Chemicals, Inc. - Leesport PA
International Classification:
G01N 2176
US Classification:
436 56
Abstract:
A method and composition for indicating the presence of a chrome-free pretreatment for improving the paint adhesion and corrosion resistance of a metal surface. The presence of the pretreatment is indicated by adding a compound to the chrome-free pretreatment which causes the pretreatment to fluoresce under an ultraviolet light. The additive which causes the pretreatment to fluoresce under an ultraviolet light is an ultraviolet tracer, such as a stilbene or a coumarin derivative, and the method according to this invention includes exposing the coated metal to ultraviolet light.

Method And Composition For Treating Metal Surfaces

Method And Composition For Treating Metal Surfaces

US Patent:
5859107, Jan 12, 1999
Filed:
Dec 20, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/774935
Inventors:
Lawrence E. Jones - Reading PA
Michael D. Wert - Laureldale PA
Jose B. Rivera - Philadelphia PA
Ted M. Schlosser - Tamaqua PA
Assignee:
Bulk Chemicals, Inc. - Reading PA
International Classification:
C09D12004, C08K 310, C08K 316
US Classification:
524406
Abstract:
A method and composition for coating a metal for use in connection with improving corrosion resistance and paint adhesion. The composition is a non-corrosive ester cross-linked polymer system having a plurality of carboxylic functional groups and a plurality of hydroxyl groups. The polymer system may be a bifunctional copolymer or the reaction product of a first polymer having a plurality of carboxylic functional groups (e. g. polyacrylic acid or polymethylvinylmaleic anhydride), and a second polymer having a plurality of hydroxyl groups (e. g. polyvinyl alcohol). The resulting reaction product of these two polymers is a cross-linked polymeric blend. A compound of a Group IV-B element may be added to this polymer blend to increase the degree of cross-linking and improve paint adhesion and corrosion resistance. Such a Group IV-B compound may be an acid such as fluozirconic acid, fluotitanic acid or fluchafnic acid, or a salt such as ammonium zirconium carbonate. The method for improving corrosion resistance and paint adhesion of a metal surface includes contacting the metal surface with a composition of the present invention and drying the composition in place.

Method And Composition For Treating Metal Surfaces Using A Polymer Blend And An Organo-Functional Silane

US Patent:
2005008, Apr 21, 2005
Filed:
Oct 21, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/690349
Inventors:
Jose Rivera - Philadelphia PA, US
Norman Schellenger - Lansdale PA, US
International Classification:
C08L001/00
US Classification:
427331000, 524522000, 524524000, 524262000
Abstract:
A method and composition for treating metal surfaces improves the paint adhesion of the metal surface, particularly its resistance to delamination of paint over a stressed area in the finished metal upon exposure to hot water. The composition is an aqueous composition of an organo-functional silane, a compound of a group IV-B element, and a polymer blend having a plurality of carboxylic functional groups and a plurality of hydroxyl groups. The method includes contacting a metal surface, such as aluminum, with the composition. The polymer blend is preferably a mixture of polymethylvinylether-co-maleic acid and polyvinyl alcohol. The organo-functional silane is preferably an epoxy silane.
