US Classification:
514282, 514331
Abstract:
The invention provides prophylactic and therapeutic methods for administering a μ-opioid receptor antagonist to treat cell barrier diseases and disorders, such as endothelial and epithelial cell barrier diseases and disorders. The diseases or disorders may amenable to the methods include inflammation, such as acute lung injury, atherosclerosis, gut-derived sepsis, a burn injury, neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis, severe neutropenia, toxic colitis, inflammatory bowel disease, enteropathy, transplant rejection, pouchitis, pig belly (pig-bel), -mediated opthalmologic infection, -mediated otologic infection and -mediated cutaneous infection. More generally, epithelial cell barrier disorders are contemplated as amenable to the prophylactic and therapeutic methods. The diseases and disorders may be induced by microbial pathogens, including bacterial pathogens such as . The invention further provides prophylactic and therapeutic methods for inhibiting the expression of bacterial PA-I lectin/adhesin and for inhibiting bacterial MvfR activity levels. Also provided is a method of using a μ-opioid receptor antagonist in the manufacture of a medicament for use in the methods described herein.

Jonathan Moss - Chicago IL
William Drell - San Diego CA
International Classification:
A61K 31448
US Classification:
514282
Abstract:
A method for preventing or treating the opioid induced side effect, inhibition of gastrointestinal motility is disclosed. The method comprises administering methylnaltrexone or another quaternary derivative of noroxymorphone to a patient prior to the administration of an opioid or after the onset of side effects induced by the administration of an opioid, wherein the methylnaltrexone or quaternary derivative is administered orally in an enterically coated form.

Use Of Methylnaltrexone And Related Compounds To Treat Chronic Opioid Use Side Effects

US Patent:
2003018, Oct 2, 2003
Filed:
Feb 4, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/357669
Inventors:
Joseph Foss - Chicago IL, US

Jonathan Moss - Chicago IL, US
William Drell - San Diego CA, US
International Classification:
A61K031/485
US Classification:
514/282000
Abstract:
A method of preventing or treating an opioid-induced side effect in a patient who has been chronically taking opioids, the method comprising administering a quaternary derivative of noroxymorphone in an amount sufficient to prevent or treat the side effect in the patient, but which amount would be insufficient to treat a patient with the same opioid-induced side effect who had not chronically been administered opioids.
