Foam Forming Liquid Dispensing Device

US Patent:
6053369, Apr 25, 2000
Filed:
Sep 28, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/161815
Inventors:
Minh Quang Hoang - Taylorsville UT
Jonathan Karl Burkholz - Salt Lake City UT
Donald Edward Hunt - Provo UT
Assignee:
Becton Dickinson and Company - Franklin Lakes NJ
International Classification:
B67D 558
US Classification:
222190
Abstract:
A foam dispensing apparatus of the present invention includes a reservoir containing a foamable liquid, with a closed headspace above a surface of the liquid. The apparatus also includes a source of a gas disposed to impose a gas pressure higher than ambient atmospheric pressure into the closed headspace. There is a mixing chamber having an inside diameter, an inlet and an outlet open to the ambient atmosphere with a flow restricter having a plurality of openings therein in gaseous communication with the closed headspace. The flow restricter is positioned at the inlet of the mixing chamber and an elongate delivery tube with an open passageway therethrough that defines a longitudinal axis extending from the inlet of the mixing chamber to below the surface of the foamable liquid disposed so that an application of the gas having higher pressure than atmospheric pressure to the headspace causes the foamable liquid to flow through the tube past the flow restricter, to mix with the headspace gas having higher pressure than atmospheric pressure that flows from the openings in the flow restricter and then to expand to atmospheric pressure in the mixing chamber thereby to form a foam from the foamable liquid and discharge the foam from the outlet.

S. Ray Isaacson - Roy UT, US
Marty L. Stout - South Jordan UT, US
Assignee:
BECTON, DICKINSON AND COMPANY - Franklin Lakes NJ
International Classification:
A61M 25/14
US Classification:
604256
Abstract:
A medical device is presented, which includes a fluid pathway and a septum slidably housed within the fluid pathway. The septum can be opened by a septum actuator disposed in a fixed position within the fluid pathway. In some examples, both the septum actuator and the septum have at least one surface exposed to the fluid pathway. An anti-pathogenic material can be applied to these surfaces.

Foamable Antimicrobial Formulation

US Patent:
2004018, Sep 23, 2004
Filed:
Jan 27, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/766562
Inventors:
Minh Hoang - Taylorsville UT, US
Jonathan Burkholz - Salt Lake City UT, US
Donald Hunt - Provo UT, US
International Classification:
A61K007/50
US Classification:
510/130000, 510/424000
Abstract:
An antimicrobial formulation is provided which comprises an antimicrobial agent and a foam boosting surfactant where the viscosity of the formulation is less than about 50 cps at 24° C. The formulation has a low viscosity and has excellent foam properties when used in a foaming dispenser. The formulation is useful in providing antimicrobial effectiveness in surgical scrub applications.

Abstract:
A blood sampling device useful for collecting a blood sample from a separate vascular access device is described herein. The blood sampling device includes a body shaped and sized for partial insertion into a separate vascular access device. The body includes a reservoir defined within the body, which has an internal volume sufficient to contain enough blood for use in a diagnostic blood test. The body also includes a gas permeable vent disposed on the body, in which the gas permeable vent is in gaseous communication with the reservoir. When connected to a separate vascular access device the blood sampling device collects a blood sample as blood flows into the reservoir from the separate vascular access device and as gases pass out the reservoir via the gas permeable vent.
