Abstract:
An approach is provided for distributing multi-media information from a satellite broadcast system. A hub receives a signal from the satellite broadcast system, wherein the signal represents video information and audio information associated with multiple broadcast channels. The hub centrally demodulates and decodes the received signal for distribution to one of a number of access point devices. According to one embodiment of the present invention, the decoded signal represents uncompressed video and audio information corresponding to one of the broadcast channels. The access point devices convert the received decoded signal for output respective displays (e.g., television sets). The hub can also be equipped with an interface to provide access to a public data network, such as the global Internet. Further, the hub can be supplied with a digital video recording capability.

Transmission Power Level Adjustment In Radio Telephony

US Patent:
5357513, Oct 18, 1994
Filed:
Sep 9, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/118553
Inventors:
Stanley E. Kay - Rockville MD
John E. Corrigan - Chevy Chase MD
Daniel R. Wendling - Darnestown MD
Ashok D. Mehta - North Potomac MD
Michael I. Parr - San Diego CA
Assignee:
Hughes Aircraft Company - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
H04J 316
US Classification:
370 953
Abstract:
A mobile telephone system multiplexes plural voice traffic channels on a single carrier using a TDMA protocol. The capacity of the mobile telephone system is increased by assigning voice traffic capacity, not on a conversation basis, but on a speech spurt basis. Accordingly, delays of undetermined duration may occur between subsequent information bursts which correspond to the transmission of speech spurts. An adjustment request regarding the power with which the information bursts are transmitted from a transmitting station to a receiving station is generated by detecting an information burst transmission at the receiving station, measuring the time which elapses following the transmission, and comparing the elapsed time with a predetermined threshold value. If the elapsed time exceeds the threshold, a further transmission is requested from the transmitting station notwithstanding the availability of any information to transmit. The power of the transmission received in response to the request is measured and a control message for requesting an adjustment to the transmission power level in response to the measurement is transmitted to the transmitting station.

Apparatus For Positioning An Antenna In A Remote Ground Terminal

US Patent:
5589837, Dec 31, 1996
Filed:
Feb 6, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/384060
Inventors:
Mohammad Soleimani - Silver Spring MD
John E. Corrigan - Chevy Chase MD
Mohammad Bukhari - Germantown MD
David A. Roos - Boyds MD
Assignee:
Hughes Electronics - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
H01Q 300
US Classification:
342359
Abstract:
An apparatus for positioning a directional antenna of a remote ground terminal which transmits and receives signals to and from a satellite via the antenna. The apparatus includes a signal generator for producing a frequency variable reference signal having a variable duty cycle, and a controller which operates to analyze the signals received from the satellite and to vary the duty cycle of the reference signal in accordance with an identification tag forming part of the received signals. The apparatus further includes a detector which receives the reference signal and produces an antenna pointing signal having an average amplitude proportional to the duty cycle of the reference signal. The controller commands the signal generator to produce a reference signal having a first duty cycle when a signal having an identification tag not corresponding to a designated central hub station is received by the antenna, and a reference signal having a second duty cycle when a signal having an identification tag corresponding to the designated central hub station is received by the antenna. The reference signal having the first duty cycle causes the average amplitude of the antenna pointing signal to equal a first value, while a reference signal having the second duty cycle causes the average amplitude of the antenna pointing signal to equal a second value.
