Fiberoptic Fuel Gauging System For Measuring The Level Of A Liquid In A Tank

US Patent:
6670601, Dec 30, 2003
Filed:
Dec 10, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/936830
Inventors:
John S. Wyler - Berwyn PA
Assignee:
Smiths Aerospace, Inc. - Malvern PA
International Classification:
G01N 1506
US Classification:
25022711, 250577, 73293, 340620
Abstract:
A safe and reliable aircraft fuel gauging system which eliminates the need for electrical wiring to transmit electrical signals into and out of the fuel tank of an aircraft. The fuel gauging system utilizes at least one light source to generate input light signals which are delivered to a plurality of probes multiplexed on a fiber optic element. The same, or a separate, fiber optic element transmits the probes output light signals to a light detector located externally of the fuel tank. Each probe includes a photoelectric conversion device, an LC resonant circuit, and a magnetooptic device for generating the responsive output light signal to the input light signal. Based on the output signal form the probes, the light detector determines the level of fuel in the tank.

Method And System For Wireless Communications In A Waveguide Environment

US Patent:
2012024, Sep 27, 2012
Filed:
Mar 21, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/052672
Inventors:
John Stephen Wyler - Berwyn PA, US
International Classification:
H04Q 5/22
US Classification:
340 101
Abstract:
A system and method of transmitting sensor signals in a waveguide environment are provided. A sensor assembly is configured to wirelessly receive a sensor interrogation signal, determine an input power level of the sensor interrogation signal, and transmit a message including the determined power level. The system also includes a sensor controller configured to transmit a sensor interrogation signal determine an output power of the transmitted sensor interrogation signal at a plurality of frequencies, receive an indication of the received input power level of the sensor interrogation signal from the sensor assembly at the plurality of frequencies, compare the transmitted output power of the sensor interrogation signal to the received power indication, and select a transmit frequency for transmitting messages between the senor assembly and the sensor controller based on the comparison.

System For Wireless Refueling Of An Aircraft

US Patent:
8381779, Feb 26, 2013
Filed:
Oct 11, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/270328
Inventors:
John Stephen Wyler - Berwyn PA, US
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Schenectady NY
International Classification:
B65B 1/30
US Classification:
141 94, 141 95, 141192, 340540, 340618
Abstract:
A system for wirelessly refueling an aircraft includes an aircraft having a fuel tank, a control valve, a fuel sensor outputting a fuel signal indicative of the amount of fuel in the at least one fuel tank, and a controller controlling the control valve in response to the fuel signal, a refueling apparatus having a fuel supply, a pump and a controller in which is stored a fuel profile including fuel data indicative of the amount of fuel to be supplied to the at least one fuel tank, and wireless communication systems operably coupled to the controllers within the aircraft and refueling apparatus to control the operation of the control valve and the pump to fill the at least one fuel tank in accordance with the fuel profile and in response to the fuel signal.

Apparatus For Measuring The Level Of A Liquid In A Tank

US Patent:
5602333, Feb 11, 1997
Filed:
Jun 17, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/261844
Inventors:
David A. Larrabee - Downingtown PA
John S. Wyler - Berwyn PA
Farid Ahmad - Collegeville PA
Assignee:
Smiths Industries - Malvern PA
International Classification:
G01F 1700, G01F 2300
US Classification:
73149
Abstract:
A fuel gauging system for use in determining the level of fuel in a tank. The system incorporates a resonant circuit for measuring the resonant frequency of at least one probe immersed in the fuel located in the tank. From measurements of variations of the frequency of resonance, the level of liquid in the tank is determined, and the fuel quantity is then calculated and displayed.

Enlarged Area Addressable Matrix

US Patent:
5270693, Dec 14, 1993
Filed:
Aug 19, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/747087
Inventors:
John S. Wyler - Berwyn PA
Frederick E. Hankins - late of Flemington NJ
Assignee:
Smiths Industries, Inc. - Clearwater FL
International Classification:
G09G 300
US Classification:
345206
Abstract:
An enlarged area addressable matrix is disclosed comprising the following major components: a matrix addressable circular display, a square mounting plane, display drivers, and routing between the display and the display drivers. The display is located on the square mounting plane so that four corner regions are formed where the display does not cover the square. These four corner regions are used to accommodate the wiring and driver circuits needed to control the display. Thus the display, display drivers, and routing all fit on the same mounting plane.
