Abstract:
A modular fusion cage and tool for the insertion of the fusion cage is provided. The fusion cage includes a ramp member having superior and inferior bone contacting surfaces, and anterior and posterior sides. The ramp member is adapted to be positioned between adjacent vertebral bodies. The implant also includes a ring member slidably matable with the ramp member. The ring member includes superior and inferior bone contacting surfaces, and anterior and posterior sides. The implant according to the present invention is particularly useful for facilitating the safe and accurate insertion of the implant between adjacent vertebral bodies.

A retractor system includes a frame and first and second retractor blades. The frame includes first and second securement features. At least one of the first and second securement features is movable with respect to the frame when the at least one of the first and second securement features is mounted to the frame. The first and second retractor blades each have a distal portion and a proximal portion. The proximal portions of the first and second retractor blades are configured to be secured proximate to the first and second securement features respectively, such that the first and second retractor blades may be positioned in a first position wherein the first and second retractor blades are laterally opposed. A movement of the at least one securement feature that is movable with respect to the frame adjusts the angle of at least one of the retractor blades, wherein the at least one of the retractor blades may be adjusted between a first angle less than 90 degrees to horizontal and second angle greater than 90 degrees to horizontal.

The invention provides a spinal disc implant comprising a ring shaped body including a first pair of opposed substantially parallel sides spaced apart by a second pair of opposed sides to define a central bore. A first one of the second pair of sides defines a substantially arcuate curve joining a first end of the first pair of sides. A second one of the second pair of opposed sides substantially linearly joins a second end of the first pair of sides. The upper and lower surfaces of the ring shaped body have a plurality of teeth extending therefrom for engaging adjacent vertebrae. The implant is made of a biocompatible metal such as titanium or an alloy thereof, and the first and second sides tapering from the second end to the first end. The interior space may have a porous hydroxyapatite block shaped to fill the interior space. The porous hydroxyapatite substance helps the prosthesis integrate into the vertebral structure by allowing one grow into the pores.

Abstract:
The embodiments provide a spinal implant that is configured for lateral insertion into a patient's intervertebral disc space. The spinal implant may have a body having a tapered anterior portion and one or more apertures. The tapered anterior portion allows for concomitant distraction of soft tissue during insertion of the implant. In addition, at least some of the apertures are designed to permit a predetermined amount of nutation by a fixation element. The fixations elements that allow nutation enable the fixation element to toggle from one position to another, for example, during subsidence of the implant in situ.

Disclosed herein are spinal implants particularly useful in interbody fusion surgery. One embodiment pertains to a plate configured to establish desired lordosis and/or disc height that may be implanted and secured to a superior and inferior vertebral body.
