Apparatus For And Method Of Performing Stereotaxic Surgery

US Patent:
5207223, May 4, 1993
Filed:
Oct 19, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/600501
Inventors:
John R. Adler - Stanford CA
Assignee:
Accuray, Inc. - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
A61B 505
US Classification:
1286531
Abstract:
A method and an apparatus are set forth for selectively irradiating a target within a patient. A 3-dimensional mapping is provided of a mapping region surrounding the target. A beaming apparatus emits a collimated beam. Diagnostic beams at a known non-zero angle to one another pass through the mapping region. They produce images of projections within the mapping region. Electronic representations of the images are compared with the reference data thereby locating the target. The relative positions of the beaming apparatus and the living organism are adjusted in such a manner that the collimated beam is focused on the target region. The comparison is repeated at small time intervals and, when the comparison so indicates, the adjusting step is repeated, as needed, and in such a manner that the collimated beam remains focused on to the target region.

A61B 600
US Classification:
600427, 600429, 378 4, 606130
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for selectively and accurately localizing and treating a target within a patient are provided. A three dimensional mapping of a region surrounding the target is coupled to a surgical intervention. Two or more diagnostic beams at a known non-zero angle to one another may pass through the mapping region to produce images of projections within the mapping region in order to accurately localize and treat the target wherein the images are captured using one or more image recorders.

Apparatus And Method For Compensating For Respiratory And Patient Motions During Treatment

US Patent:
6501981, Dec 31, 2002
Filed:
Sep 8, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/657771
Inventors:
Achim Schweikard - Hamburg, DE
John R. Adler - Stanford CA
Assignee:
Accuray, Inc. - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
A61B 600
US Classification:
600427, 606130, 600429, 600439, 378 69
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for performing treatment on an internal target region while compensating for breathing and other motion of the patient is provided in which the apparatus comprises a first imaging device for periodically generating positional data about the internal target region and a second imaging device for continuously generating positional data about one or more external markers attached to the patients body or any external sensor such as a device for measuring air flow. The apparatus further comprises a processor that receives the positional data about the internal target region and the external markers in order to generate a correspondence between the position of the internal target region and the external markers and a treatment device that directs the treatment towards the position of the target region of the patient based on the positional data of the external markers.

Method For Correcting Magnetic Field Inhomogeneity Distortion In Mri Images Having Disconnected Regions

US Patent:
5485085, Jan 16, 1996
Filed:
Nov 28, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/345518
Inventors:
Thilaka Sumanaweera - Palo Alto CA
Sandy A. Napel - Menlo Park CA
Gary H. Glover - Menlo Park CA
John R. Adler - Stanford CA
Assignee:
Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior University
International Classification:
G01V 314
US Classification:
324307
Abstract:
Disclosed is a method to correct the geometric distortion caused by field inhomogeneity in MR images such as images of patients wearing MR-compatible stereotaxic frames. A previous distortion correction method derives patient-dependent error maps by computing the phase-difference of 3D images acquired at different T. sub. E 's. The time difference (. DELTA. T. sub. E =4. 9 ms at 1. 5 T) is chosen such that the water and fat signals are in phase. However,. DELTA. T. sub. E is long enough to permit phase wraps in the difference images for frequency offsets greater than 205 Hz. Phase unwrapping techniques resolve these only for connected structures; therefore the phase difference for fiducial rods may be off by multiples of 2. pi. relative to the head. This uncertainty is removed by using an additional single 2D phase-difference image with. DELTA. T. sub.

2013028, Oct 24, 2013
Filed:
Apr 18, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/865903
Inventors:
Hugh Brent Solvason - Stanford CA, US
John R. Adler - Stanford CA, US
Assignee:
The Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior University - Palo Alto CA
International Classification:
A61N 5/10
US Classification:

Method For Depositing Radiation In Heart Muscle

US Patent:
2008017, Jul 24, 2008
Filed:
Jan 9, 2008
Appl. No.:
11/971725
Inventors:
John Adler - Stanford CA, US
Thilaka Sumanaweera - Los Altos CA, US
Patrick Maguire - Menlo Park CA, US
Assignee:
CYBERHEART, INC. - Menlo Park CA
International Classification:
A61B 19/00
US Classification:
606130, 901 41
Abstract:
Radiosurgical treatment of tissues of the heart to mitigate arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation or the like. Radiosurgical targeting of the relatively rapid movement of heart tissues may be enhanced by generating a moving model volume using a time-sequence of three dimensional acquired tissue volumes. A digitally reconstructed radiograph (DRR) may be generated from the model at a desired cardiac and/or respiration motion phase and compared to an X-ray or the like taken immediately before or during treatment. When a series of radiation beams will be directed to a heart tissue to alleviate an arrhythmia, the treatment system may alter the radiation beam series in response to the type of the arrhythmia.
