Redundant Data And Power Infrastructure For Modular Server Components In A Rack

US Patent:
7138733, Nov 21, 2006
Filed:
Dec 13, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/017785
Inventors:
Vivian McDaniel-Sanders, legal representative - Spring TX, US
John D. Nguyen - Cypress TX, US
Randall Pascarella - Round Rock TX, US
Assignee:
Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. - Houston TX
International Classification:
H01B 7/30
US Classification:
307147, 307149
Abstract:
A modular infrastructure for a computer server rack, comprising modular server chassis, each chassis configured to receive a plurality of servers and two network switches. The switches are redundantly coupled to each server in the same chassis via point to point links within a data backplane. The rack further comprises redundant AC to DC power supplies configured to transmit power to a power backplane in each of the server chassis through a power bus bar. DC power is provided by both power supplies to each server in the rack through the power bus bar and a power backplane located in the same chassis. Each power supply is sufficient to power the entire rack. Servers within separate chassis are coupled into the same network by merely daisy chaining the switches in the rack. Individual servers are deployed by sliding the servers into a server chassis to engage connectors in the backplanes.

Hot Mirroring In A Computer System With Redundant Memory Subsystems

US Patent:
7028215, Apr 11, 2006
Filed:
Jun 25, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/178981
Inventors:
Kevin G. Depew - Kingwood TX, US
Jeoff M. Krontz - Tomball TX, US
John D. Nguyen - Cypress TX, US
David F. Heinrich - Tomball TX, US
David W. Engler - Cypress TX, US
Assignee:
Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. - Houston TX
International Classification:
G06F 11/00
US Classification:
714 7
Abstract:
A computer system implements hot mirroring for main system memory. That is, the computer system permits a user to hot plug a new memory board into the system and the system will respond by switching to a mirrored memory mode in which write cycles are performed to both memory boards (new and old). Once a new board is hot plugged into the system, the contents of the old board are copied over, in a background mode, to the new board so that both boards will have the same data. Because this background copying process may take a non-trivial amount of time and may detrimentally interfere with other system traffic, the system a user to exert control over the relative speed of the background copying so as to trade-off the time it takes to switch over to the mirroring mode versus the impact on on-going system behavior.

Computer System Architecture With Hot Pluggable Main Memory Boards

US Patent:
7035953, Apr 25, 2006
Filed:
Jun 25, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/179001
Inventors:
Jeoff M. Krontz - Tomball TX, US
Kevin G. Depew - Kingwood TX, US
John D. Nguyen - Cypress TX, US
David F. Heinrich - Tomball TX, US
David W. Engler - Cypress TX, US
Vincent Nguyen - Sugarland TX, US
Randolph O. Dow - Waller TX, US
Owais Kidwai - Cypress TX, US
Assignee:
Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. - Houston TX
International Classification:
G06F 13/00
US Classification:
710302, 710301, 710312
Abstract:
The specification discloses a server system implementing hot pluggable memory boards in an architecture using X86 processors and off-the-shelf operating system, such as Windows® or Netware, which do not support hot plugging operations. Thus, the specification discloses systems and related methods for hot plugging main memory boards transparent to, and without the help of, the operating system. The operating system need only have the ability to recognize additional memory in order to use it. Moreover, the specification discloses a related set of memory error detection and correction techniques, again which are implementing transparent to, and without the help of, the operating system.

US Classification:
710104, 710 9, 710 15, 710301
Abstract:
A technique for differentiating nodes in a multi-node electronic system includes establishing an intended configuration for the system, the configuration including a number of nodes to be installed and a specification of intended node locations. A node ID for each of multiple nodes to be installed in the system is established, and the multiple nodes are installed. Using the node ID established for each of the multiple nodes, a determination is made whether the multiple nodes as installed comply with the intended configuration.
