Abstract:
Compositions and methods are described for the treatment and prevention of abdominal and thoracic adhesions as well as other adhesions using a cell-sustaining and surface-separating composition that nourishes and sustains grafted or present non-keratinizing (i.e. nonepidermal) epithelial cells. The composition is preferably a suspension of viable epithelial cells in a polymerizable, absorbable composition, such as fibrin glue, that will provide separation of the organ surfaces and nourishment to seeded and grafted cells.

Abstract:
An improved endoscopic device of the type having a surgical needle; a hollow tube; and a filamentary strand attached at its distal end to the surgical needle, and slideably engaged at its proximal end about the tube with a partially tightened slip knot. The improvement in the device relates to means for pulling the filamentary strand through the hollow tube proximally when the surgical needle is detached from the strand. The device can be used to approximate tissue or ligate a vessel.

A method for treating bowel adhesions 20, 22, 24, 26 with an adhesion barrier 56 in the form of a flexible strip 76 of material is provided. The bowel 12, 14 is surgically accessed to expose the affected bowel portions 11, 13, 15, 17 and then the flexible strip 76 of material comprising the adhesion barrier 56 is applied to the bowel surfaces 50, 52, 54, 60, 62 of those portions 11, 13, 15, 17.
