Service Center System And Method As A Component Of A Population Diagnostic For Sleep Disorders

US Patent:
2004003, Feb 12, 2004
Filed:
Aug 7, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/214792
Inventors:
John Sotos - Palo Alto CA, US
John Branscum - Belmont CA, US
Assignee:
Apneos Corporation - Palo Alto CA
International Classification:
A61B005/00
US Classification:
600/300000
Abstract:
A method for evaluating sleep disorders in mammals and distributing control information related to the sleep disorders through electronic communication networks. The method includes acquiring analog information related to physiological signals through a mobile device from a mammal user. The mammal user is at a geographic location outside of a sleep laboratory staffed by trained technicians. The mobile device is coupled to a sensing device, which is coupled to monitoring region(s) of the mammal. The method includes converting the analog information into a digital format using a signal processing device and transmitting information related to the physiological signals in the digital format to one or more service computers through an electronic communications network. Each of the service computers is operably coupled to a health information service facility. The method determines if the mammal user has related control information at one of the health information service facilities. The related control information is received through the communication network. The method processes the information related to the physiological signals at one or more of the service computers to provide a report associated with the information related to the physiological signals and the mammal user. The method communicates report information in the report associated with the information related to the physiological signals upon indication of receipt of at least control account information of the mammal user based upon the determining the related account information.

Inventors:
John Sotos - Palo Alto CA, US
John Branscum - Belmont CA, US
Patricia Branscum - Belmont CA, US
Assignee:
Apneos Corp. - Palo Alto CA
International Classification:
A61B 5/08, A61B 7/00
US Classification:
600529000, 600586000
Abstract:
A system for recording one or more parameters of a patient, comprising a peri-tracheal microphone, a memory, a controller, a power source, and a housing, is disclosed. The microphone provides a signal indicative of at least quiet breathing of the patient. The memory stores information derived from the signal indicative of at least quiet breathing of the patient. The controller writes the information into the memory. The power source supplies electrical energy to at least one of the microphone, the memory, or the controller. The housing contains one or more of the controller or the memory or the power source, and is coupled to a non-peri-tracheal portion of the patient's body such that the housing moves substantially in concert with said non-peri-tracheal portion of the body. Information stored in the memory may be assessed to characterize the state of the patient, possibly including aspects of breathing while awake or asleep.

Method And Apparatus For Evaluation Of Sleep Disorders

US Patent:
2005011, May 26, 2005
Filed:
Nov 24, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/721115
Inventors:
John Sotos - Palo Alto CA, US
John Branscum - Belmont CA, US
International Classification:
A61B005/00
US Classification:
600300000
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for the evaluation of sleep disorders is disclosed. Two sensors are used to diagnose and usefully characterize abnormal sleep breathing, a sensor of tracheal vibration, and a sensor of axial body position. The two sensors are attached to the patient in locations substantially adjacent to one another. In a preferred embodiment, these two sensors can be physically combined into a single unit, thereby increasing further the simplicity and reliability of attaching the sensors to the patient. The unit is applied to a patient near a tracheal segment, preferably at a suprasternal notch location. The position sensor has two axes of sensitivity that are at angles to each other so that the sensor may determine which of four positions it is in relative to gravity. When attached to the patient, the sensor is oriented so that it may be determined whether the patient is oriented in a supine, prone, left lateral decubitus, or right lateral decubitus position. Data are recorded from both sensors concurrently, preferably over a period of time of several hours, and stored in a recording device, preferably containing a non-volatile memory, so that the data may be reviewed later for diagnosis and characterization.

System And Method For Assessment Of Sleep

US Patent:
2007017, Aug 2, 2007
Filed:
Jan 12, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/652956
Inventors:
John Sotos - Palo Alto CA, US
John Branscum - Belmont CA, US
International Classification:
A61B 5/08
US Classification:
600529000
Abstract:
A method and system for characterizing breathing in an organism are disclosed. The method acquires data values indicative of periodic respiratory function, for example, tracheal sound envelope data acquired during a period of time associated with a sleep period of the organism. The method defines a first subset of data values among the data values and a second subset of data values among the data values. Cross-correlating the first and second subsets of data values yields a first result vector which is truncated, normalized, and output. These steps are optionally repeated for other subsets of data. From the resulting output, the organism's average respiratory rate may be determined. In addition, periods of time corresponding to sleep, wakefulness, rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep, and non-REM sleep may be identified. The time it takes the organism to fall asleep may also be determined.
