Treatment Of Particulate Biodegradable Organic Waste By Thermal Hydrolysis Using Condensate Recycle

US Patent:
2008022, Sep 18, 2008
Filed:
Mar 14, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/048423
Inventors:
John W. Lee - Bellevue WA, US
Assignee:
CH2M HILL, INC. - Englewood CO
International Classification:
C02F 9/02, C02F 1/68
US Classification:
210749, 210767, 210194
Abstract:
A method of treating particulate biodegradable organic waste by thermal hydrolysis. The method includes subjecting a quantity of the particulate biodegradable waste to thermal hydrolysis at a temperature above about 130° C. and a pressure at or above the saturated water vapor pressure to produce a slurry. The slurry will include solubilized organic material and unhydrolyzed residual solids. The method further includes decreasing the pressure at which the slurry is maintained. Typically, the step of decreasing slurry pressure will occur in a flash tank, which allows the separation of an organic acid-rich steam from other hydrolysis products. The method further includes capturing the steam or other condensable gases released when pressure is decreased and condensing the steam or other condensable gases into a condensate. The captured condensate may then be added to a quantity of particulate biodegradable waste prior to thermal hydrolysis. Also disclosed is an apparatus for practicing the method described above.

Apparatus For The Treatment Of Particulate Biodegradable Organic Waste

US Patent:
2007009, May 3, 2007
Filed:
Oct 25, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/586343
Inventors:
John Lee - Bellevue WA, US
Assignee:
CH2M HILL, Inc. - Englewood CO
International Classification:
C02F 3/28
US Classification:
210180000, 210209000, 210603000
Abstract:
An apparatus for treating particulate biodegradable organic waste includes a thermal hydrolysis reactor receiving the particulate biodegradable organic waste for performing thermal hydrolysis at a temperature of about 130° C. at a pressure at or above the saturated water vapor pressure of the organic waste to produce a slurry including solubilized organic material and residual solids. A pH adjustment means for adjusting the pH of the particulate biodegradable organic waste as necessary to provide an acidic pH of greater than about 3.15 before thermo hydrolysis of the particulate biodegradable organic waste is provided. Separating means receive the solubilized organic material and residual solids for separating solubilized organic material from the residual solids. An anaerobic reactor is configured to receive the solubilized organic material.

Method And Apparatus For The Treatment Of Particulate Biodegradable Organic Waste

US Patent:
2005027, Dec 15, 2005
Filed:
Jun 6, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/146426
Inventors:
John Lee - Bellevue WA, US
Assignee:
CH2M Hill, Inc. - Englewood CO
International Classification:
C02F003/28
US Classification:
210603000, 210631000
Abstract:
A method for treating particulate biodegradable organic waste includes adjusting the pH as necessary to provide an acidic pH prior to introducing the waste to a thermal hydrolysis reactor and hydrolyzing the waste at a temperature of about 130° C. or greater and a pressure greater than the saturated water vapor pressure to produce a slurry including solubilized organic material and residual solids. The solubilized organic material is separated from the residual solids using a liquid/solid separator and the solubilized organics are subjected to anaerobic digestion to produce a methane gas. The method may further include preheating the particulate biodegradable organic waste with latent heat of the separated solubilized organic material prior to thermal hydrolysis.

Method And Apparatus For The Treatment Of Particulate Biodegradable Organic Waste

US Patent:
2003012, Jul 3, 2003
Filed:
Oct 31, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/286454
Inventors:
John Lee - Bellevue WA, US
International Classification:
C02F003/00
US Classification:
210/603000, 210/613000, 210/631000
Abstract:
A method for treating particulate biodegradable organic waste includes sizing the waste and adding a base prior to introducing the waste to a thermal hydrolysis reactor and hydrolyzing the waste at a temperature of about 130° C. or greater and a pressure greater than the saturated water vapor pressure to produce a slurry including solubilized organic material and residual solids. The solubilized organic material is separated from the residual solids using a liquid/solid separator and the solubilized organics are subjected to anaerobic digestion to produce a methane gas. The base is preferably potassium hydroxide (KOH) at a concentration of about 1%. The method may further include preheating the particulate biodegradable organic waste with latent heat of the separated solubilized organic material prior to thermal hydrolysis.
