Document Builder Classes And Methods

US Patent:
6957416, Oct 18, 2005
Filed:
Jan 31, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/773121
Inventors:
John C. Adams - Westminster CO, US
Assignee:
Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. - Houston TX
International Classification:
G06F009/44
US Classification:
717107, 717100, 717106, 715500
Abstract:
Computer readable media and methods are associated with a software development tool that is useful when authoring programs that generate documents, such as markup language documents. In one respect, the invention is a computer readable medium on which is embedded computer software. The software comprises a base class, an inline class and a container class. The base class defines a parent-child relationship by which a child object is stored within the storage space of its parent object. The inline class is an extension of the base class, wherein a member of the inline class is permitted to be a child object but prohibited from being a parent object. The container class is an extension of the base class, wherein a member of the container class is permitted to be a child object and/or a parent object. A well-formed document can be modeled in software using members of the inline and/or container classes. In another respect, the invention is a method of using the a set of classes to develop a document-producing program.

Method And Apparatus For Customizably Calculating And Displaying Health Of A Computer Network

US Patent:
7003564, Feb 21, 2006
Filed:
Jan 17, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/764563
Inventors:
James R Greuel - Ft Collins CO, US
John C Adams - Westminster CO, US
Assignee:
Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. - Houston TX
International Classification:
G06F 15/173
US Classification:
709224, 709223
Abstract:
Apparatus and methods facilitate customizable and extensible performance monitoring of a computer network. One method accepts a composite score definition in terms of N system variables, wherein N≧2; determines N raw data values, each raw data value corresponding to one of the N system variables; computes the composite score in accordance with the definition using the N raw data values as inputs; and outputs the composite score. The composite score definition is preferably in the form of a markup language, such as XML. The composite score definition preferably comprises, for each of the N system variables, a mapping and a weight. Preferably the composite score is displayed in at least one graphic form, such as a dial gauge, a bar indicator or a number, on a hypertext page. The hypertext page preferably contains one or more links to hypertext pages containing information regarding the scores and/or raw data values from which the composite score is derived. Another method accepts a mapping by which a raw data value associated with a corresponding system variable is mapped to a score, determines a raw data value corresponding to the system variable, converts the raw data value to a score in accordance with the mapping; and produces an output based on the score.

System For Displaying Topology Map Information Through The Web

US Patent:
2002015, Oct 31, 2002
Filed:
Apr 30, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/843887
Inventors:
Lawrence Besaw - Ft Collins CO, US
John Adams - Westminster CO, US
International Classification:
G06F013/00
US Classification:
345/734000
Abstract:
A system for providing a topology map generation service from a service information portal is improved by utilizing an object-oriented class, a mapview module, configured for generating topology maps. The mapview module may be implemented in an object-oriented language such as Smalltalk, C++, JAVA or the like. The mapview module may be configured to provide member functions that include at least associating an output file stream; adding icon symbols and connections symbols between the icon symbols; generating a background graphic (e.g., a building, a geographic map, etc.,); and generating a topology map (or image) by calling a command on an object; and utilizing hypertext transfer protocol (“HTTP”) to transfer images across a network. In effect, the mapview module hides all the low-level graphic details for generating a topology view/map/image from a user. Thus, the generation of the topology maps may become easier. Additionally, since the mapview module is an object-oriented class, the mapview module may be used on a variety of computing platforms and support multiple graphic formats such as graphics interchange format (“GIF”), portable network graphics (“PNG”) and the like.
