Varactor Tuner Frequency Controller

Varactor Tuner Frequency Controller

US Patent:
3958180, May 18, 1976
Filed:
Jun 3, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/476082
Inventors:
John Barrett George - Indianapolis IN
Assignee:
RCA Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
H04B 134
US Classification:
325422
Abstract:
A varactor tuner frequency controller wherein a tuning voltage is developed for optimumly tuning a VHF tuner or a UHF tuner to any one of a plurality of channels. A capacitor utilized to store charge for developing the tuning voltage is discharged by means of a pulse developed by a monostable circuit which is gated by a bandswitch reset pulse. Charging of the capacitor is provided for by a positive current source which supplies a substantially constant current to the capacitor in the absence of a hold signal, the hold signal only being present when a selected channel has been reached. In the presence of a hold signal, the current supplied by the positive current source is modified in accordance with an automatic fine tuning signal, and a negative current source supplies a substantially constant current to the capacitor approximately equal to the current supplied by the positive current source in the absence of the hold signal to effect a stopping of the sweep. When irregular spaced channels are being tuned, the negative current source is momentarily disabled in the presence of a hold signal to provide for an incremental sweep of the tuning voltage to place the tuning voltage within a range which will provide for proper automatic fine tuning operation.

Bandstart Detector System For A Television Tuning System

Bandstart Detector System For A Television Tuning System

US Patent:
3961263, Jun 1, 1976
Filed:
Jun 3, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/476086
Inventors:
John Barrett George - Indianapolis IN
Assignee:
RCA Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
H04B 116
US Classification:
325421
Abstract:
A bandstart detector system for a television receiver tuning system wherein a sample of oscillator signals utilized for conversion of radio frequencies into intermediate frequencies is coupled to a plurality of tuned circuits. Detecting means are coupled to each of the tuned circuits to produce control signals having an amplitude inversely related to the difference between the oscillator signal frequency and the resonant freqency of each of the tuned circuits. The amplitude of the control signal will vary as the oscillator signal frequency is swept in a regular manner through a predetermined band of frequencies corresponding to television channel frequency allocations. The control signals are coupled to a sensing circuit which produces one output signal when the control signal is below a predetermined level and a second output signal when the control signal is above a predetermined level. The output signals produced by the sensing circuit are utilized to initiate counting of pulses, each produced as a result of a frequency comparison of a plurality of harmonically related frequency samples with a regularly recurring variation of the oscillation frequency. The resultant pulses are allowed to be accumulated in a counter employed to identify the channel being received.

Short-Term Power Dropout Arrangement Useful In A Television Receiver

Short-Term Power Dropout Arrangement Useful In A Television Receiver

US Patent:
4249089, Feb 3, 1981
Filed:
Jun 27, 1979
Appl. No.:
6/052660
Inventors:
James J. Wolford - Indianapolis IN
John B. George - Indianapolis IN
Assignee:
RCA Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
H01H 8300
US Classification:
307140
Abstract:
The control portion of a television receiver includes a flip flop which when supplied with operating power stores a binary signal having either an "on" level corresponding to the on condition of the receiver or an "off" level corresponding to the off condition of the receiver. In addition to a user responsive input arrangement for selectively controlling the level of the binary signal, a switching circuit is coupled to the flip flop to return the binary signal to its prior level after power line dropouts having less than a predetermined duration, and otherwise causing the binary signal to have its "off" level. The switching circuit is rendered operative at the end of power line dropouts to cause the binary signal to have its "on" level if an enabling signal selectively developed by a circuit including a capacitor and a diode connected between the flip flop and capacitor during the presence of operating power is still stored in the capacitor.

Tuner Bandswitching System For A Television Tuning System

Tuner Bandswitching System For A Television Tuning System

US Patent:
3980959, Sep 14, 1976
Filed:
Jun 3, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/476083
Inventors:
John Barrett George - Indianapolis IN
Assignee:
RCA Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
H04B 132
US Classification:
325470
Abstract:
A tuner bandswitching system for a television receiver tuning system wherein a reset pulse generated at the completion of the selection of a channel to be received is utilized to determine the initial stable state of a series of bistable circuits and to provide a bandswitch reset pulse for use in establishing an initial voltage output from a voltage sweep generator utilized to scan a varactor tuned VHF tuner or a varactor tuner through one or more bands of frequencies. The bistable circuits control switching voltages supplied to the VHF tuner and the UHF tuner to provide for sequencing of the tuning system serially through, for example, the low VHF band, the high VHF band, and the UHF band until the appropriate band has been selected wherein the selected channel can be tuned. When the selected channel is tuned, a hold signal is developed. Data identifying the channel being received during a sweep through a given band is accumulated in a counter.

High Power Remote Control Ultrasonic Transmitter

High Power Remote Control Ultrasonic Transmitter

US Patent:
3984705, Oct 5, 1976
Filed:
May 23, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/580679
Inventors:
John Barrett George - Indianapolis IN
Assignee:
RCA Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
H01L 4104
US Classification:
310 81
Abstract:
A wide bandwidth, high gain ultrasonic frequency transducer drive circuit utilizes a relatively low voltage source of supply voltage. A first signal path from a source of drive signals includes circuitry resonant with the transducer for providing a relatively high signal voltage across this transducer. A second signal path from the source of drive signals includes a resonant circuit mutually coupled to the first resonant circuit for inducing signal energy into the first path and increasing the signal voltage across the transducer.

Wired Remote Control Apparatus For A Television Receiver

Wired Remote Control Apparatus For A Television Receiver

US Patent:
4386371, May 31, 1983
Filed:
Jul 28, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/287561
Inventors:
John B. George - Indianapolis IN
Assignee:
RCA Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
H04N 544, H04N 560
US Classification:
3581941
Abstract:
In a wired remote control for use with a television receiver, audio signals are coupled to a loudspeaker by a transformer providing electrical isolation. The remote control device comprises an oscillator applying a signal at a frequency above the audio range to the transformer and a rectifier at the transformer secondary converting the oscillator signal to a DC signal. That DC signal is selectively applied by a switch to an optocoupler which couples to a control device for controlling the audio source. A filter blocks the oscillator signal from the speaker. Additionally, the control device controls TV channel selection.
