Electrical Connector Assembly With A Laterally Deflectable Latch Member And Cpa

US Patent:
2003004, Mar 13, 2003
Filed:
Sep 16, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/244267
Inventors:
James Raudenbush - Halifax PA, US
John Hall - Harrisburg PA, US
International Classification:
H01R003/00
US Classification:
439/489000
Abstract:
An electrical connector assembly is provided having a connector position assurance device (CPA) and a plug and header. The plug and header have mating interfaces that interconnect to form an electrical connection therebetween. A deflectable latch assembly is mounted on an exterior surface of one of the plug and header. The latch assembly includes at least one latch beam that is deflectable from side-to-side relative to the plug and header along an axis transverse to the direction of engagement between the plug and header. A CPA is provided having a beam blocking portion that blocks lateral movement of the latch assembly. The CPA is movable between first and second positions relative to the latch beam. The beam blocking portion is spaced laterally remote from the latch beam when the CPA is in its first pre-staged position, thereby permitting lateral deflection of the beam along an arcuate path transverse to the direction of engagement between the plug and housing. The beam blocking portion is moved to a position immediately adjacent the latch beam when the CPA is moved to a locking position to prevent lateral deflection of the latch beam along the arcuate path.

Assignee:
Tyco Electronics Corporation - Berwyn PA
Tyco Electronics AMP GmbH - Bensheim
International Classification:
H01R 4/10
US Classification:
439877
Abstract:
An electrical terminal is provided for terminating a wire. The electrical terminal includes an electrical contact and a crimp barrel extending from the electrical contact. The crimp barrel is configured to be crimped around an end of the wire. The crimp barrel includes a base and opposing side walls that extend from the base. The base and the side walls define an opening of the crimp barrel that is configured to receive the end of the wire therein. The side walls extend outwardly from the base to ends. The side walls include base segments that extend from the base and end segments that extend from the base segments and include the ends. A sealing wing extends from the end of at least one of the side walls. The side walls are configured to be folded over when crimped over the end of the wire such that a gap is defined between the end segment and the base segment of at least one of the side walls. The sealing wing is configured to extend within the gap between the end segment and the base segment of the corresponding side wall when the side walls are crimped over the end of the wire.
