Minimum Thickness Force Sensor With Temperature Compensation

US Patent:
5780746, Jul 14, 1998
Filed:
Aug 7, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/695231
Inventors:
John F. Brady - Wood Dale IL
Assignee:
Fel-Pro Incorporated - Skokie IL
International Classification:
G01L 1900, G01L 122
US Classification:
73766
Abstract:
A force sensor comprising a substrate, a conductive material providing an electrically discernible response to compressive stress disposed on the substrate, and a thermocouple disposed on the substrate proximate to the conductive material. A measurement processor is also described that includes first means for measuring electrical signals from the conductive material indicative of compressive stress, second means for measuring electrical signals from the thermocouple indicative of temperature in proximity to the conductive material, means for determining a temperature compensating factor derived from the electrical signals indicative of compressive stress and the electrical signals indicative of temperature, and means for determining a temperature compensated compressive stress value derived from the temperature compensating factor and the electrical signals indicative of compressive stress.

Large Motion Expansion Joint

US Patent:
4087191, May 2, 1978
Filed:
Jan 31, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/763810
Inventors:
John F. Brady - Wood Dale IL
Lawrence F. Pyle - Des Plaines IL
Assignee:
Felt Products Mfg. Co. - Skokie IL
International Classification:
E01C 1102
US Classification:
404 69
Abstract:
A large motion expansion joint having a plurality of parallel load-carrying modules which are disposed transverse to the direction of the roadway. The load-carrying modules generally span the expansion gap between adjacent structural members to support vehicular traffic thereon and include a first end module mounted to an edge of one of the structural members, a second end module mounted to an edge of the other structural member and at least one intermediate module. The intermediate modules carry a plurality of spaced sleeve-like beam guides which are aligned with spaced elongated sleeve-like support beam housings secured to the second end module. A plurality of support beams are fixed to the first end module and slide into the beam guides and housings generally in the direction of the roadway so as to support the intermediate load-carrying modules. During expansion and contraction of the expansion gap, the load-carrying modules slide upon the support beams and move toward and away from each other as the gap width changes. The spacing between modules is positively proportionally maintained during expansion and contraction by linkages interconnecting each adjacent pair of load-carrying modules.

Bearing Pad Assembly

US Patent:
4033005, Jul 5, 1977
Filed:
Dec 20, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/534708
Inventors:
Daniel E. Czernik - Hinsdale IL
John F. Brady - Wood Dale IL
Assignee:
Felt Products Mfg. Co. - Skokie IL
International Classification:
E01D 1906
US Classification:
14 161
Abstract:
A bridge bearing assembly comprising an elastomeric bearing pad having side edges and end edges. The bearing pad has contactor surfaces extending upwardly from a mounting plate. A metallic shear controller pin fixed to the mounting plate is positioned adjacent the contactor surfaces. It has surface portions spaced from, but positioned to contact, the contactor surfaces when the bearing pad is deformed in shear in the direction of the end edges. The upper surface of the bearing pad is in contact with a slide plate. Controller pins may be positioned in an opening in, or at end edges of the bearing pad and may be cylindrical or frustoconical. Temperature compensating indicators are provided on the bearing assembly for selectively positioning the slide plate relative to the bearing pad. Preinstallation connectors for securing the slide plate to the bearing pad may be used to help prevent separation of the slide surfaces of the slide plate and bearing pad.

Roadway Joint Seal And Sealing Assembly

US Patent:
4111583, Sep 5, 1978
Filed:
May 23, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/799594
Inventors:
John F. Brady - Wood Dale IL
Donald J. McDowell - Riverside IL
Assignee:
Felt Products Mfg. Co. - Skokie IL
International Classification:
E01C 1104
US Classification:
404 69
Abstract:
A sealing system for roadway expansion joint gaps and the like. A continuous seal is provided comprising an elongated central arched segment, a pair of longitudinally extending legs, and a protrusion extending upwardly from each of the legs. The seal embeds at least one fabric reinforcement layer to stiffen, rigidify and strengthen the seal means and the protrusions. The seal is secured to each roadway slab between a horizontal surface and a retainer which defines an elongated recess for sealingly receiving, engaging and compressing a protrusion. A limiter is provided for limiting the compression of the protrusions, and a retainer lip is provided for visually indicating that sealing of a protrusion has been effected.

Method And Assembly For Sealing Gaps Between Adjacent Roadway Slabs

US Patent:
4084912, Apr 18, 1978
Filed:
Jul 19, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/706691
Inventors:
Lawrence F. Pyle - Des Plaines IL
John F. Brady - Wood Dale IL
Assignee:
Felt Products Mfg. Co. - Skokie IL
International Classification:
E01C 1102
US Classification:
404 74
Abstract:
A method and gap sealing assembly for sealing adjacent roadway slabs at the gap. Gap sealing members bridging the gap are positioned in end-to-end array. A resistance heater is positioned adjacent elastomeric end surfaces of the members and a rubber-like heat activatable bonding agent is positioned between the end surfaces. When the heater is energized, the end surfaces are bonded to each other to form a seal in situ.
