Method Of Preparing A Fuel Cell Electrode

US Patent:
5732463, Mar 31, 1998
Filed:
Oct 20, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/546332
Inventors:
Richard D. Breault - Coventry CT
John Donahue - Suffield CT
Robert L. Haven - Enfield CT
Assignee:
International Fuel Cells Corporation - South Windsor CT
International Classification:
H01R 4300
US Classification:
29825
Abstract:
The present invention discloses a method for preparing a catalyst to be applied to an electrode substrate, the method incorporates cooling the catalyst material to a temperature below a critical temperature and grinding the cooled catalyst to produce a catalyst material which will create a uniform catalytic layer on an electrode substrate. The finished electrode having significantly fewer particles than the electrode prepared by the prior art method.

Carbon Graphite Component For An Electrochemical Cell And Method For Making The Component

US Patent:
4938942, Jul 3, 1990
Filed:
Jul 17, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/755876
Inventors:
Michael E. Gorman - Suffield CT
Richard D. Breault - Coventry CT
John Donahue - Suffield CT
Sudhangshu Bose - Manchester CT
Assignee:
International Fuel Cells - South Windsor CT
International Classification:
C01B 3164
US Classification:
423448
Abstract:
A method for making a carbon-graphite component, such as a fuel cell substrate, suited for use in an electrochemical cell includes forming a precursor sheet structure comprising a resin, fibers that are graphitizable, and an inorganic compound containing boron and oxygen. Various details of the method are developed that effect the carbon yield of cellulose fibers used for the precursor sheet and the thermal and the electrical conductivity of the component. In one embodiment, the inorganic compound of boron and oxygen is boric acid.

Porous Plate For An Electrochemical Cell And Method For Making The Porous Plate

US Patent:
4652502, Mar 24, 1987
Filed:
Dec 30, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/814423
Inventors:
Richard D. Breault - Coventry CT
John Donahue - Suffield CT
Assignee:
International Fuel Cells, Inc. - South Windsor CT
International Classification:
H01M 208
US Classification:
429 13
Abstract:
A porous plate for an electrochemical cell, such as plates 22, 24 having a sealing material disposed in an edge region 41 of the plate is disclosed. Various construction details including a method for making the plate are disclosed which increase the cross pressure material the plate can withstand. In one embodiment, the seal region 41 is impregnated with powder having a low structure and predetermined particle size using a pressurized liquid carrier.
