US Classification:
175 62, 166 50, 166313
Abstract:
The present invention discloses a selection process for installing underground workspace in or near a hydrocarbon deposit that is an appropriate workspace from which to drill, operate and service wells applicable to any of a number of methods of recovering hydrocarbons. The present invention includes a number of innovative methods for developing workspace for drilling from a shaft installed above, into or below a hydrocarbon deposit, particularly when the hydrocarbon reservoir is at significant formation pressure or has fluids (water oil or gases) that can enter the workspace. These methods can also be used for developing workspace for drilling from a tunnel installed above, into or below a hydrocarbon deposit. The present invention also discloses a procedure for evaluating the geology in and around the reservoir and using this information to select the most appropriate method of developing workspace for drilling from a shaft and/or tunnel.

Alignment And Imaging Of An Eye With An Ultrasonic Scanner

US Patent:
2013014, Jun 6, 2013
Filed:
Nov 26, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/684699
Inventors:
John D. Watson - Evergreen CO, US
International Classification:
A61B 8/10, A61B 8/00, A61B 8/13, A61B 8/08
US Classification:
600452
Abstract:
A method and apparatus are disclosed for generating accurate and precise ultrasonic images of biological materials or animate objects, such as the cornea and lens of the eye, and, in particular, to an ultrasonic scanning apparatus that can position its virtual center of curvature such that its ultrasonic transducer will emit pulses that reflect substantially perpendicularly from a curved specular surface of interest within the eye. This invention can allow real time imaging of a lens as it accommodates and can better enable researchers and ophthalmic surgeons to develop, fit, implant and diagnose performance of artificial lenses including accommodative lenses.

Multi-Power Source Locomotive Control Method And System

US Patent:
7944081, May 17, 2011
Filed:
Jan 4, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/651613
Inventors:
Frank Wegner Donnelly - North Vancouver, CA
John David Watson - Evergreen CO, US
Bruce Wolff - Livonia MI, US
Assignee:
Railpower, LLC - Nicholasville KY
International Classification:
B60L 1/00, B60L 3/00, H02G 3/00
US Classification:
307 91
Abstract:
Control modes for operating multiple power sources include energy storage systems and applicable to large systems such as locomotives. Selectable operating modes are provided for different locomotive speed ranges and work loads. A common DC bus electrical architecture is used so that prime power sources need not be synchronized. Multiple-engine locomotives have the engine systems that may be electrically connected in parallel or in series or in combinations of parallel and series to a DC bus.

2008007, Apr 3, 2008
Filed:
Sep 28, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/864011
Inventors:
Frank Donnelly - North Vancouver, CA
Michael Kobler - Sebastopol CA, US
John Watson - Evergreen CO, US
Dana Brock - Sebastopol CA, US
Andrew Squires - Calgary, CA
Assignee:
OSUM OIL SANDS CORP. - Calgary
International Classification:
E21B 43/24
US Classification:
166303000, 166057000
Abstract:
The present invention relates generally to a method and means of injecting hot fluids into a hydrocarbon formation using a combustion and steam generating device installed at or near the well-head of an injector well. The various embodiments are directed generally to substantially increasing energy efficiency of thermal recovery operations by efficiently utilizing the energy of the combustion products and waste heat from the generator. The generator apparatuses can be installed at the well-head which, in turn, can be located close to the producing formation. The combustion products may be injected into a well along with steam or sequestered at another location.

This disclosure relates to a highly efficient gas turbine engine architecture utilizing multiple stages of intercooling and reheat, ceramic technology, turbocharger technology and high pressure combustion. The approach includes utilizing a conventional dry low NOx combustor for the main combustor and thermal reactors for the reheat apparatuses. In a first configuration, there are three separate turbo-compressor spools and a free power turbine spool. In a second configuration, there are three separate turbo-compressor spools but no free power spool. In a third configuration, all the compressors and turbines are on a single shaft. Each of these configurations can include two stages of intercooling, two stages of reheat and a recuperator to preheat the working fluid before it enters the main combustor.
