Well Reference Apparatus And Method

US Patent:
6499537, Dec 31, 2002
Filed:
May 18, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/573584
Inventors:
Charles H. Dewey - Houston TX
John E. Campbell - Houston TX
Wei Xu - Houston TX
Assignee:
Smith International, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 4709
US Classification:
1662551, 166382, 166387, 166 50, 166 882, 1661176, 166217, 175 61
Abstract:
The well reference apparatus and method of the present invention includes a reference member preferably permanently installed within the borehole at a preferred depth and orientation in one trip into the well. The reference member provides a permanent reference for the location of all operations, particularly in a multi-lateral well. The assembly of the present invention includes disposing the reference member on the end of a pipe string. An orienting tool such as an MWD collar is disposed in the pipe string above the reference member. This assembly is lowered into the borehole on the pipe string. Once the preferred depth is attained, the MWD is activated to determine the orientation of the reference member. If the reference member is not oriented in the preferred direction, the pipe string is rotated to align the reference member in the preferred direction. This process is repeated for further corrective action and to verify the proper orientation of the reference member.

Adjustable Bent Housing For Controlled Directional Drilling

US Patent:
5048621, Sep 17, 1991
Filed:
Aug 10, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/566190
Inventors:
Thomas F. Bailey - Houston TX
John E. Campbell - Houston TX
Assignee:
MASX Energy Services Group, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 708
US Classification:
175 74
Abstract:
An adjustable bent housing for controlled directional drilling of well holes. The bend angle of the housing can be conveniently adjusted upon release of the locking nut which is threadably mounted to the motor casing. The locking nut engages an adjusting ring having splines to lockingly engage both the motor casing and the adjustment sub. The adjustment sub and motor casing are lockingly engaged against axial displacement by threads and a plurality of locking balls. An end portion of the outer surface of the motor casing and an end portion of the inner surface of the sub have an angle offset from the central axis to allow angle adjustment. The adjusting ring and locking nut are mounted to the coaxial portions of the components to simplify machining and ensure a clean locking engagement. Adjustment of the bend angle is accomplished by loosening the locking nut to disengage the adjusting ring and allow rotation of the motor casing relative to the universal housing sub.

Dual Rotating Stripper Rubber Drilling Head

US Patent:
5213158, May 25, 1993
Filed:
Dec 20, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/811553
Inventors:
Thomas F. Bailey - Houston TX
John E. Campbell - Houston TX
Assignee:
MASX Entergy Services Group, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 33068
US Classification:
166 82
Abstract:
A drilling head with dual rotating stripper rubbers designed for high pressure drilling operations ensuring sealing under the extreme conditions of high flow or high pressure wells such as horizontal drilling. The dual stripper rubbers seal on the same diameter yet are manufactured of different materials for different sealing functions. The lower stripper rubber is manufactured from a more rigid, abrasive resistant material to divert the flow from the well. The upper stripper rubber is manufactured of a softer sealing material that will closely conform to the outer diameter of the drill string thereby preventing the flow of fluids through the drilling head.

Assignee:
A-Z International Tool Company - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 2900
US Classification:
166 553
Abstract:
A well cutting tool for cutting casing in a well bore having a cutter body and at least one cutting arm pivotally mounted in a longitudinally extending slot of the cutter body. The cutting arm has removable and replaceable cutting inserts positioned along its outer front surface and its lower end surface. A removable and replaceable projection on the upper end of the cutter arm is provided for contact by a fluid pressure actuated piston for outward pivoting of the cutter arm into cutting position.

Thru Tubing Tool And Method

US Patent:
7448446, Nov 11, 2008
Filed:
Feb 2, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/670888
Inventors:
John E. Campbell - Houston TX, US
Charles H. Dewey - Houston TX, US
Chad D. Evans - The Woodlands TX, US
Assignee:
Smith International, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:

US Classification:
166216, 1661176, 166217, 175 61, 175 81
Abstract:
A downhole assembly comprises a whipstock and an expandable anchoring tool connected to the whipstock, wherein the tool comprises a body including a plurality of angled channels formed into a wall thereof and a plurality of moveable slips, wherein the slips translate along the angled channels between a collapsed position and an expanded position. A method for performing a thru tubing operation in a well bore comprises running a downhole assembly comprising a whipstock and an expandable anchoring tool in a collapsed position through a first diameter section of the well bore, orienting the whipstock, and translating a plurality of pairs of slips of the expandable anchoring tool to an expanded position into gripping engagement with a casing lining a second diameter section of the well bore that is larger than the first diameter section, wherein the pairs of slips are axially spaced apart along the expandable anchoring tool.
