Compositions And Methods For Culturing Microorganisms Requiring Special Gaseous Environments

US Patent:
5034331, Jul 23, 1991
Filed:
Aug 8, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/763530
Inventors:
John H. Brewer - Abilene TX
Assignee:
Fairleigh Dickinson Laboratories, Inc. - Abilene TX
International Classification:
C12M 122, C12M 300, C12M 304
US Classification:
435298
Abstract:
Metal hydrosulfites are found to be advantageous reducing agents for removing oxygen from contained atmospheres. When dissolved in alkaline aqueous gels, the hydrosulfites are effective to initiate and maintain anaerobiosis for culturing oxygen-sensitive microorganisms and animal tissues.

Identification Of Reagins In The Blood Serum Of Allergen Sensitized Vertebrates

US Patent:
4486540, Dec 4, 1984
Filed:
May 10, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/493413
Inventors:
John H. Brewer - Abilene TX
Terry L. Foster - Abilene TX
Assignee:
Science Research Center, Inc. - Abilene TX
International Classification:
G01N 3354
US Classification:
436513
Abstract:
The disclosure is of an improved method for the in-vitro detection and identification of reagins in the blood serum of allergen sensitized vertebrates. The improvement comprises admixing the blood serum of the vertebrate with solid, porous carrier particles bearing surface adsorbed, known allergens. An agglutination reaction indicates the presence of reagins corresponding to the surface adsorbed allergen.

Apparatus For Generation Of Anaerobic Atmosphere

US Patent:
4287306, Sep 1, 1981
Filed:
Apr 2, 1979
Appl. No.:
6/026337
Inventors:
John H. Brewer - Abilene TX
Assignee:
Becton, Dickinson and Company - Paramus NJ
International Classification:
B01J 700, B01J 802, C12M 100
US Classification:
435287
Abstract:
A gas generating package includes tablets or other material, which when contacted with water generates both hydrogen and carbon dioxide. A catalyst for the hydrogen-oxygen reaction is applied to the exterior of the package, with the exterior of the package preferably also having applied thereto carbon dioxide and anaerobic indicators. In this manner fresh material is employed during each run requiring an anaerobic atmosphere.

Marking Vaccine

US Patent:
4152412, May 1, 1979
Filed:
Nov 4, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/848408
Inventors:
John H. Brewer - Abilene TX
International Classification:
A61D 102, A61D 700, A61K 3910
US Classification:
424 7
Abstract:
A vaccine, toxoid or like agent is administered to an animal by injecting the agent (usually intracutaneously) on a physiologically acceptable colored particle, preferably activated charcoal, which has a particle size whereby the colored particle remains at the point of injection to provide a visible mark which evidences administration of the vaccine or toxoid, and a repository of immunologically active material to serve as a booster.
